The D&T department occasionally uses manual hand drills and has a battery drill which is regularly used by staff and students. Each type of drill is different and must be taught / demonstrated separately.
As with all tools and equipment used by pupils, they are expected to observe a practical demonstration before being authorised to use them themselves. Learners must prove that they can use them safely and competently.
The condition of all hand tools are regularly checked by the D&T technician. Any defective equipment must be reported to the technician so that they can be repaired or taken out of service and replaced.
The material to be used drilled must be appropriate for the use of the manual hand drill.
Suitable methods of work-holding must be used at all times to reduce the risk of injuries.
Users must be made aware of the danger presented by the exposed crown gears and the risk to trapping skin if the drill is handled incorrectly.
