There are five metal-turning centre lathes in the technology department. Three situated in classroom 1G2 and the other two are in the general purpose workshop.
KS3 students are prohibited from using the machine. KS4 students are permitted under direct supervision.
As with all tools and equipment used by pupils, they are expected to observe practical demonstrations for each lathe turning operation before being authorised to use the machine. Learners must prove that they can use the centre lathe safely and competently.
The lathe is safety-maintenance checked monthly and in-between (depending upon frequency of usage) by the D&T technician. Annual servicing and safety certification is carried out by external contractors.
The lathe is not lubricated and is only authorised for use with low-carbon steel, mild steel, aluminium and nylon turning operations.
Wood turning is not carried out on these, we have 2 spindle and 1 bowl lathes in the department. (See other Risk Assessment)
Whilst this video is over 25 years old, the skills in it are still relevant today when working with a manual lathe like the one we have here at Cynffig. This first video covers facing, turning down, parting off and drilling operations.
