I do like my piece, but I do hate some things about it. I wish I had taken more time to stack the layers, as well as perfect the dots. Now looking at it, the dots are smooshed and crispy, as well as the pot is very uneven and natural-looking. I wish I had also measured my pot out better and added more dimension to it. After allowing my pot to dry for a couple of weeks, I was able to use glaze to add more character to my pot. I believe that my glazing might have just saved this project. I went for a different kind of look and added 3-4 different styles and colors of glaze. I was very iffy at first, but I think that the pot turned out to be different and cool.
To start off, I began with creating a base with a slab of clay and molded it into the most symmetrical circle possible. After creating this base, I then began to pull up the edges of the mug, and extend the clay outwards. Once a mug-like shape was made, I measured each side to make it as symmetrical as possible and then scored more strands of clay to make it to my liking. After I had accomplished my ideal shape, I started to work on the human-like features, including the eyes, mouth cheeks, etc. I sculpted the eyes in order to accomplish a devilish-intent in my character’s eyes and then began smoothing out the clay. I then used a holing tool and created a hole in the bottom to make a draining hole for the pot. After it was finished, I scored the entire mug, now pot, and it was ready to be used outside in a garden.
While looking at my artwork, I can see not a ton of line variation, but I do see a lot of straight lines and color in areas. On one side of the sculpture, the lines are very straight and seem to be neat and clean; However, as I look at the other side, the lines become less straight. It’s almost as if the goal of this artwork was to create two different sides to symbolize the two different sides of something in the world. It could be symbolizing how people always have more than one side to them, and most people only see the super straight and normal side, and never the messy and thrown together side.
Thank you for looking at my artwork! I have enjoyed ceramics a lot this year, and want to thank Mrs. Whiting for helping me grow and learn as an artist. Hope you enjoyed!
