ORGANIC COIL POT
The artwork is portraying a natural, desert theme. The purpose is to make something relatively intricate look simple. I think it is pleasing to the eye because the horizontal coils together with the vertical grooves contrast each other. I was hoping to make it look boho themed and show textures of paint/glaze, to give it a rustic look. I like this piece of art because it is unique and I did not know where I was going with it. At first I wanted to make something neat and uniform, but then I liked how it looked uneven with bulging areas and dimension. The best thing about this piece is its’ originality and it portrays an organic and bohemian theme. I like how the coils give it a simple look and then the unevenness of the rest of it plays off of each other.
TOTEM MUG
The clay used for the Totem Mug was less porous and more uniform and malleable. We started with making the base mug. We rolled it into a ball shape. After this we put our two thumbs inside and manipulated it to open up wider and make a pinch pot. After this I rolled coils and added them to my pot to make it taller. We then started to make the nose. I pushed from the inside of the clay to reflect the areas where the features of the face will be- eyes, nose, mouth. I built up the features and constantly perfected them as I went. My artwork was inspired by my own face, but then turned into something different. I built it using knowledge about my own face to understand dimensions and depth. I tried to portray a sad, sleepy face. I did this with heavy eyes and a neutral mouth. It portrays the social issue of sadness and neutrality among society. I also thought of cartoons to aid me in my work. Cartoons have dramatic facial features and expressions. My goals for this project were to have a smooth pot and a very abstract face. I wanted my pot to look like the subject in the painting “The Scream” by Edvard Munch. I like the way it turned out. I think it has a very artistic, prominent face. I learned that I like to go with the flow and not worry too much on planning my every next step. I also learned that I have good visions of how I want things to turn out. It helped me understand more how to manipulate clay your way and work with it easier.
ANIMAL MUG
I started off with a piece of leather hard clay and rolled it into a ball. After that I stuck my two thumbs in the middle and began manipulating the clay to expand. After this I used coils of clay to build up the mug to be taller. I chose to make a bear. I made the two ears sticking out from the top of the mug. I built up the mouth/snout area and I dug out places for the eyes and mouth. I was inspired by a teddy bear like one seen in the show Care Bears. I wanted to make something "cutesy" and unique. It expresses a social issue of the girly-girl style many girls have nowadays. I tried to convey an emotion of love for animals and nostalgia for one's childhood. It gives a message that art doesn’t have to be serious all the time. Art can be playful and child-like. My goals for this project was to have smooth lines and blending of different features. I did a lot better on the animal mug than I did on the human face one. I made the mug taller rather than wider, which I did mistakenly in the past. I also planned ahead the facial structure of the bear. It helped me understand the difference between a human and animal face. I learned that I like to go with the flow and see how things turn out and I usually succeed at that.
