Unified Sports

In Unified Sports, students of all physical abilities work together to learn and compete in a variety of exciting sports, including soccer, basketball, and softball. If you love sports and want to be part of a positive, supportive team environment, come be a part of Unified Sports!

This class is recognized by the OSAA as a school sports team made up of athletes (students with disabilities) and mentors (typically developing students). Time outside of school hours may sometimes be required for games and tournaments.

This course may be repeated for credit. Students who wish to participate all year should forecast twice for Unified Sports. Scroll down to see questions and answers about this class!

If you have already fulfilled your PE requirement, this course will transcribe as elective (EL) credit.

Course Q&A

What does a typical day in this class look like?

This class focuses on three main sports: soccer (fall), basketball (winter), and softball (spring). Mentors work alongside athletes to develop individual and team skills. Other mini-units may also be taught, but what doesn't change is the partnerships between mentors and athletes.

What about homework?

Units culminate in games and tournament against several other local Unified Sports teams. Sometimes these games and tournaments are outside of school hours and are a required part of the class.

Why should I take this class?

You should take this class if you have in interest in developing friendships and being a positive role model for students with diverse needs. Athletes in this program range from invisible disabilities to those who are profoundly impacted and may display behavioral challenges. It is important to be able to respect all students, regardless of their abilities, both athlete and mentor.

Is there a prerequisite for this class?

You'll need a willingness to work with, and develop relationships with, students who have diverse needs.

What else do I need to know about this class?

This class is a based on team participation. If you can't commit to being at team events, or if you are uncomfortable at all with students who have disabilities, this class may not be right for you.
