AP US Government and Politics

AP US Government and Politics will give you a challenging analytical perspective on government and politics in the United States. You will learn important facts, concepts, and theories pertaining to U.S. government, understand patterns of the political process and political behaviors, and explain various government structures and procedures and their effects on society. Course topics include constitutional underpinnings, political beliefs and behaviors, political parties, interest groups and mass media, public policy, institutions of the national government, and civil rights and liberties. Participation in the AP Exam is strongly encouraged. Please note: In order to earn the government (GV) credit required for graduation, you must complete the entire yearlong course. If you drop this course before completing it, you must then complete the standard American Government course to earn the required GV credit. Diploma Credit Area: 0.5 Social Studies (SS), 0.5 Government (GV)

  • If you have already fulfilled the SS requirement, the first semester of this course will transcribe as elective credit (EL).
  • Beginning with the class of 2026, all Oregon students will be required to complete 0.5 credit of civics education to graduate. This course fulfills that requirement.

Course Q&A

What does a typical day in this class look like?

A typical day in AP Gov might include a warmup discussion, a lesson, and time in the latter part of the class to work on weekly assignments.

What about homework?

You can expect 20-30 pages of reading per week, with one to two additional assignments.  All work is posted at least two weeks in advance, and all work for the week is due Friday by midnight.  

What about tests?

Tests in AP Gov consist of 50 multiple-choice questions and one free response question.

What do past students say about this class?

Past students have said this is a fun class that they felt like they learned a lot in.  The work load is not overwhelming, and they are enjoying following current events in international and domestic politics/issues. 

Why should I take this class?

You should take this class if you are looking for a more advanced and in-depth look at government and politics.
