Course Q & A

What can I expect in this class?

In Lit & Comp 1 Honors, you can expect to complete high-level coursework and more challenging reading assignments than in the standard Lit & Comp 1 course. We will write more essays and move at a faster pace overall. There will be approximately six major writing assignments over the course of the year.

What does a typical day in this class look like?

A typical day in Lit & Comp 1 Honors might include a short "brainwarmer" (logic or language challenge), a mini-lesson on grammar and/or vocabulary, writing instruction, and content (reading) discussion.

What about homework?

In Lit & Comp 1 Honors, almost all reading is done at home. When we are reading short stories or novels, that reading is all done as homework (usually about 20-30 minutes if assigned). In the standard Lit & Comp 1 course, all reading is done in class. The only other homework in Lit & Comp 1 Honors will be when you are working on essays and larger writing assessments. There is no written/composed homework apart from what is mentioned above.

What about tests?

What do past students say about this class?

Past students will likely say they loved Lit & Comp 1 Honors and that it is challenging but fun.

Why should I take this class?

You should take Lit & Comp 1 Honors if you are up for a challenge and feel like you have a good base skill level in language arts.

Is there a prerequisite for this class?

Although the average student in Lit & Comp 1 Honors received an A in eighth-grade language arts, there is not technically a prerequisite. Mr. Rubenstein will do a writing diagnostic on the very first week of class, and from that, he will be able to help identify any students who might be misplaced. Regardless of his recommendation, all students are welcome if they choose to stay.

What else do I need to know about this class?

If you are not sure whether to take this class, please consult your eighth grade language arts teacher or Mr. Rubenstein directly.
