AP Chemistry

AP Chemistry is a rigorous course designed to meet the requirements of a college freshman-level chemistry course. Course Q & A

What can I expect in this class?

In AP Chemistry you will dive deeply into a college-level chemistry class. We cover acid-base chemistry, intermolecular forces, kinetics, thermodynamics, atomic theory, and electrochemistry.

What does a typical day in this class look like?

A typical day in AP Chemistry might include a lecture, practice problems, and small group activities.

What about homework?

Expect to spend a minimum of 30 minutes on work outside of class time per class day.

What about tests?

Tests in AP Chemistry are a mix of multiple choice and free-response questions. They make up a substantial portion of the grade in the class. The instructor gives opportunities to raise a test grade after the test date.

What do past students say about this class?

AP Chemistry is challenging. It's fun. It's worth taking. It prepares them for college chemistry and sparks a greater interest in the field of chemistry.

Why should I take this class?

You should take AP Chemistry if you want to have a more challenging and thorough experience with chemistry than you get in the regular chemistry class. If you are college-bound with a science major in mind, you'll benefit from this class. Even students who get a 2 on the AP Exam are going to be more prepared to thrive in chemistry in college.

Is there a prerequisite for this class?

Yes. You should have already taken Chemistry 1 with a grade of A (or a B with exceptional circumstances). You should also have already finished Algebra 2 and be enrolled in Pre-Calculus or an AP Calculus class.

What else do I need to know about this class?

Trying to master any subject involves practice with purpose. The expectation is to do practice problems with the goal of growing knowledge, not just "do it to turn it in." Keys are available but should be viewed to check answers after practice problems are finished. Make sure to review your tests and discuss missed questions with Mr. Young to correct any misconceptions. His focus will be on your learning. Grades are of secondary importance to that main goal.
