Chemistry 1

Chemistry is a study of the structure and properties of matter. This laboratory-based course is designed to integrate science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and core content related to the fundamentals of chemistry. Topics addressed will include the structures of atoms and compounds, the Periodic Table, chemical reactions, acids and bases, gasses, solutions, chemical quantities, kinetic theory, and thermodynamics. Course Q & A

What can I expect in this class?

In Chemistry 1, you will learn the basic language of chemistry, including both the conceptual and mathematical underpinnings used to describe chemical reactions.

What does a typical day in this class look like?

A typical day in Chemistry 1 might include practice naming and writing compounds, doing calculations, drawing models, and discussing practical applications of chemistry.

What about homework?

Anything you don't finish in class becomes your responsibility. You don't have to do it at home, but you will need to finish it outside of class.

What about tests?

We will have unit assessments in Chemistry 1 roughly every three to four weeks and cover one unit at a time. A semester final happens at the end of each semester and covers just that semester's material.

What do past students say about this class?

Past students have said Chemistry 1 helped prepare them for physics and chemistry in college. It is challenging but accessible.

Is there a prerequisite for this class?

Yes. You should have finished Algebra 2 with an A or B grade or be taking Algebra 2 at the same time as Chemistry 1. You may also take this course with prior science instructor approval.

Why should I take this class?

You should take Chemistry 1 if you are considering college or a technical trade school (automotive, electrical, plumbing, etc.).

What else do I need to know about this class?

There are hands-on labs in Chemistry 1, but they don't happen all the time. Most happen in the second semester.
