Ballard UK & Arcola Companies are in the process of creating an environmental management system (EMS) planning tool, "EMS015 ISO 14001 workbook", to ensure that all relevant EMS issues (emergency situations, legal compliance obligations, risks and changes) are captured and that the EMS delivers its intended output. Through this workbook we will plan and manage:
a) Compliance to ISO 14001:
- Standard checklist.
b) Process Ownership & Communication - RASICs (Responsible, Accountable, Supporting, Informed, Consulted):
- For all Environmental processes.
c) Environmental Objectives:
- Formulated in a SMART structure: Specific, Measurable, Agreed/Assigned, Realistic, Time-based.
- Flow from Arcola's IMS company level objectives (see 06 Planning under 00 IMS).
- Arcola Companies' Environmental objectives are (2019 TBC):
EMS-00 Certify all Arcola Companies to ISO 14001.
EMS-01 Improve recycling inc. implementation of waste management hierarchy (Prevention, Minimisation, Reuse, Recycling, Energy recovery, Disposal). Helen Freudenberg.
EMS-02 Improve sustainable procurement.
EMS-03 Improve Environmental awareness.
EMS-04 Reduce electricity consumption.
EMS-05 Reduce heat consumption.
EMS-06 Reduce water consumption.
- Each of the above Environmental objectives will have environmental goals and plans to reach them.
d) Environmental emergency situations:
- Building is on fire.
- Internal and external flooding.
- Pests (animals and plants).
- Chemical leaks (to water, land and air).
- Boiler emissions.
- Legal non-compliance.
e) Risks:
- Risks include Threats and Opportunities.
- We are using international best-practice per ISO 31000:2018 Risk management - Principles and Guidelines
- Risk assessment approach is to: i) Identify events, ii) Identify sources and consequences, iii) Evaluate the magnitude of risk.
- Risk management approach is to: i) Identify existing controls, ii) Identify further controls, iii) Decide strategy, iv) Implement decided controls and v) Monitor risk.
f) Changes to EMS:
- Based on Improvement needs.
- As required by Risk management.
- As required by external changes (Legal compliance obligations, Interested parties, etc).
g) Schedule of EMS annual delivery:
- Scheduled activities for System level management.
- Scheduled activities for each Environmental process.
- Scheduled delivery of Environmental objectives.
