APROQUEN Club Walk-a-thon Supported by Fourth Grade

The Fourth graders at ANS have displayed incredible compassion and determination by actively supporting the ANS Aproquen Club. Through a combination of walking, running, and seeking donations, these young students have demonstrated their commitment to helping young burn victims in need. Their collective efforts showcase their generous spirit and how our community unites for a worthy cause. The Fourth graders' dedication to supporting burn victims through their actions is truly inspiring and heartwarming, reflecting the best qualities of empathy and solidarity in our school community.

Second Grade Writing Celebration

In a cozy corner of ANS second-grade classroom, excitement is in the air. The young students are bustling with anticipation, for a very special event - the Second-Grade Nonfiction Writing Celebration. These budding authors have spent weeks crafting nonfiction pieces about topics they consider themselves experts in. It's a culmination of their hard work, creativity, and learning, and today, their parents and families are invited to share in the joy of their accomplishments.

The journey to this writing celebration began with a simple question: "What are you an expert in or what do you want to know more about?" Second grade teachers encouraged their students to explore their passions and knowledge. The results were surprising and diverse. Topics ranged from dinosaurs to outer space, from soccer tricks to the life cycles of butterflies.

After researching, they brainstormed ideas, outlined their pieces, and began drafting. As any writer knows, writing is rewriting, and these young authors embraced the revising and editing process. They engaged in peer editing sessions, offering constructive feedback to their classmates, and using a rubric to ensure their work met specific criteria.

The peer editing process was a crucial step in the journey towards becoming published authors. The students learned to give and receive feedback graciously, further developing their communication and critical thinking skills. It wasn't just about correcting spelling or grammar, but also about helping each other to clarify ideas, structure their pieces, and ensure their writing was engaging and informative. This collaborative effort made the writing process a communal experience, reinforcing the idea that writing is a journey shared with others.

These second-graders didn't just become authors; they became experts in their chosen fields. This celebration served as a reminder of the limitless potential within young learners when given the opportunity to explore and share their knowledge. It was a day of pride, joy, and, most importantly, a celebration of the incredible growth of these young writers and experts.

Kindergarten Literacy Celebration

This celebration is about Kindergarteners reading poems, songs and books with simple patterns. They have been careful to track the words they are reading by pointing to each word as they read them. They have even been getting to know a few words that often appear in books and are learning the sounds of letters in the alphabet. Children have done all this work  to be stronger readers, and also so they can "share the gift of reading" with other people they love.

1st & 2nd Grade Spanish
Writing Celebration

First-grade students enthusiastically shared their artful creations with their second-grade peers. These young authors carefully crafted instructional books centered around specific topics.

The expert readers of second grade informational books also celebrated the closing of the workshop, putting into practice the reading strategies and teaching their audience everything they had learned on a specific topic.

MAP Testing

With a strong start to the academic year, we are now culminating the first trimester of learning.   Over the next two weeks, third - ninth graders will take the MAP Reading and Math tests.   This is our Middle of the Year (MOY) test window.  The testing schedule is outlined below.  Primary students will take the MAP test in the computer labs, with their teachers, during class time.  Secondary students will take the MAP test on iPads during their Community Values classes (6th & 7th Graders) or during the College & Career Advancement sessions during Flex Day (8th & 9th Graders).

The MAP tests are directly aligned to our Mathematics and Reading curricula.  The data that we gather helps us monitor both school wide achievement levels and individual student performance data. After testing, parents will receive notification once the MAP scores and full report are accessible in their child(ren)’s e-locker on the Parent PlusPortal.  Students will review their progress on goals, in conferences with their teacher(s).

MAP testing gives teachers, support staff, students and parents an opportunity to check in on progress made this school year.  It allows us to partner with students to reflect on their progress so far, and to revise goals set for ongoing growth.  The MAP test is an adaptive, computer-generated test, meaning it adapts each question to the appropriate level of your child’s learning, which helps students maintain a positive attitude toward testing.

At ANS, we use MAP test performance as one of a wide variety of assessment data. The best preparation for improved performance on MAP is commitment to one’s learning journey and ongoing improvement in formative assessment.  To become more familiar with the testing format and style of questioning, please note these two resources:  NWEA Student Resources and the Khan Academy Mappers site

Your child(ren)’s attendance and punctuality is essential to the efficient administration of these tests.  Like all school days, your child(ren)’s presence is invaluable in their educational journey.  As always, please make sure your child(ren) has a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast and arrives to school on time.  If you have any questions, comments or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

ANS Leadership Team
