Basketball

Basketball is somewhat of a boom at ANS right now, coinciding with National Teams improving their world ranking to a position never before achieved, the professional league receiving recognition with the National Champions Real Esteli shining in Latin American competition, and Nicaraguan D1 college superstar Norchad Omier looking like becoming the first ever Nicaraguan to play in the NBA, in the coming years.

At ANS we have an incredible basketball program that is unrivaled locally with teams in 6 separate age group levels and over 130 students of all ages playing the game in after school sports, including a dedicated girls program from middle school and up (which we haven’t had for many years) and a Boys varsity team that will participate in the upcoming AASCA basketball tournament for the first time since 2019.

We are privileged to count upon a group of coaches who have experience at the national team and professional league level as coaches and/or active players, and have an ongoing relationship with the National Basketball Federation to host events aimed at the “formulation phase” of young players, in which select ANS students are able to participate.

In October this relationship with the national federation will see our coaching team be invited to participate in courses of varying levels and topics run by the World Basketball Federation (FIBA), setting us up for more success in this sport.

ATHLETICS STUDENTS OF THE WEEK

Gian Carlos Palazio
José Rodríguez
Fernando Baldizón

Attending their first AASCA Basketball tournament for several years is already a superb achievement for our boys varsity basketball team and the logistics related to this trip are enormous.

Student leaders on every ANS team that goes to an AASCA tournament are included and supported in a process of equipping their team with special game uniforms, travel suits, holdalls and other sporting items for each player.

This requires securing the support of sponsors, liaising with providers and coordinating the movements of all players and coaches.

Gian Carlos, Jose and Fernando are practicing hard for their upcoming trip whilst simultaneously complying with all of the above, and we would like to thank them for their hard work and sacrifice for the team.

MOTIVATION

The key to success is failure.

What's coming up,
What's going on

The second round of Basketball Federation Tryouts will be held at ANS this Sunday, 8.00am to 12.00pm, with two ANS players having been invited to round 1 and making the grade for this weekend’s activity.  We wish all the best to Gian Carlo Palazio and Maximus Parrales!

ANS varsity teams in Basketball, Soccer and Volleyball are continuing their participation in ‘Copa Tigo’.

Non varsity practice groups in after school sports are nearing the end of their 6 week ‘pre-season’ and coaches are preparing to begin arranging games for these, with friendly encounters in the planning phase before cups and competitions are introduced later in the school year.
