February 2021
Winter Storm Uri was a major winter and ice storm that had widespread impacts across the United States, Northern Mexico, and parts of Canada from February 13th to February 17th. Federal disaster declarations were approved for Louisiana, Oklahoma and a Major Disaster Declaration has been requested by Texas. Record low temperatures and snowfall were identified in multiple cities in Texas.
The winter storm resulted in over 170 million Americans being placed under various winter weather alerts across the United States and caused blackouts for over 9.7 million customers. So far there have been 47 fatalities associated with this storm (source).
The lack of power resulted in disruption of water and sanitation services, lack of heat, and the cold weather caused plumbing issues with frozen pipes and pipes bursting in some homes. COVID-19 vaccine distribution has also been affected by the storm by delaying critical deliveries to multiple states.
Reports of homes with burst water pipes that may have caused water damage in the interior of homes have been noticed but the full extent of this remains unknown. Local authorities National & State VOADs, and Crisis Cleanup continue to gather information to better understand the further impacts and unmet needs.
