MARCH, 2020
MARCH, 2020
On March 3rd, severe storms, including two tornadoes, impacted Western and Middle Tennessee. The National Weather Service has confirmed there was an EF3 with 165 mph winds, tracked through Metro Nashville into Wilson County, as well as an EF4 tornado, severely impacted Putnam County with 175mph winds.
The tornadoes and severe storms caused 24 weather-related fatalities, damaged or destroyed five public schools, left 101,521 residents without power, and closed State Government offices. On March 5th, Davidson, Wilson, and Putnam counties received a Major Disaster Declaration with FEMA.
The volunteer response has been immense. In Nashville (Davidson County), Hands On Volunteers have reported they have more than 22,500 people signed up to volunteer on the weekend after the event.
The AHAH Rapid Response team has been effective in engaging in field work shortly upon arrival. The assessment team was on the ground 2 days after the event, and field crews were operational just 2 days after that. Upon the recommendation of the State Emergency Operations Center and the Tennessee VOAD our initial focus has been on Wilson County, more specifically the hard hit Mt Juliet. Coordination was established with a local City Councilman.
