Make data readily accessible
2. Make data easy to understand
3. Keep data secure
Data management is the practice of collecting, storing, and using data securely, efficiently, and cost-effectively. The goal of data management is to help our organization optimize the use of data so that we can make informed decisions and take actions that maximize the benefit to the organization.
One of the IT department's goals is to "Improve the inter-connectedness and quality of the organization’s data." What does that mean? It means that we are attempting to bring together data from all our various systems so that we can better understand how our constituents (donors, volunteers, board members, beneficiaries, etc) are engaging online with our organization.
Web analytics are the measurement and analysis of data to understand user behavior across our web pages and social media accounts. Our analytics platforms measure activity and behavior on our website, for example: how many users visit, how long they stay, how many pages they visit, which pages they visit, and whether they arrive by following a link or not.
Data for web analytics is compiled using Google Analytics, Salesforce, Mailchimp, and Mautic.
Google Analytics is one of the many tools that Google provides to help us understand what visitors are doing on our websites and how our sites are performing. It collects a vast amount of data and provides us with access to it. We use this data, often combining it with other data sources, to create reports that help you gain critical insight into our sites and the people who visit them.
(Note that all the data we obtain through Google Analytics is anonymized, so we can't identify or track a specific user's activity on our sites.)
Wondering what a specific metric is in a report? The Google Analytics glossary below provides a description of all standard web analytics metrics. If you can't find a metric in this glossary, it is likely a value from a different system or a custom calculation. Reach out to datareporting@allhandsandhearts.org for more information.
Tableau is a data visualization tool that is at the core of our data management and web analytics strategy. It allows us to blend data from various different systems and databases and display it in a way that's interactive and easy to understand. Tableau is used throughout the organization to prepare and view data.
Reports and dashboards created with Tableau are viewable on this website.

Tableau provides several tools for analysts to connect to data and create data visualizations. These are advanced tools that are currently limited to a few analysts throughout the organization.
Tableau provides a wide range of trainings for these tools. Here are a few recommended courses:
