The Steeplegate Mall opened on August 1st 1990, some of the stores that opened with the mall were KB Toys and Hallmark. 3 of the 4 mall anchor stores would open before the mall, JCPenny opened July 28th 1990 , Sears and Stinebach opened July 30th 1990. The mall's 4th anchor store Sage Allen opened August 15th 1990. An Applebees opened in the parking lot in 1992. Sage Allen closed in late December 1992-early January 1993 after the company's bankruptcy. A Canad movie theater opened next to the mall on July 5, 1996, the movie theater was later rebranded to Hoyts in 1997 after they bought Canad. On April 10th 1999, Steinbach closed after their bankruptcy. Bon-ton would open in the former Sage Allen store and part of the Former Steinbach on October 31st 1999. KB Toys closed in December 2000. In 2001 the mall would receive a remodel with clock tower branding and signs. The remaining space of the Steinbach would be expanded and opened as a Circuit City on March 1st 2001. During the remodel a Old Navy store was built next to the food court and opened June 11th 2001. Pacsun opened in December 2001 in part of the former KB Toys. CVS pharmacy closed in early 2002. Payless Shoe Source and Hallmark closed in early 2003. Hoyts was rebranded as Regal Cinema after being acquired by Regal in 2003. Circuit City closed in March 2009. Ritz camera closed mid 2009. The mall always didn't really have every store space filled but starting in the early 2010s the mall started experiencing lots of stores leaving the mall. The Gap store closed on January 27th 2011. Aeropostale closed march 2014. Burger King closed in late spring 2014, and Sbarro closed in 2014. Abercrombie and Fitch closed in late summer 2014. Old Navy closed on January 25th 2015. on December 19 2015, Village Idiots party rental / bounce house park would open in former Old Navy. Olympia Sports closed on March 4th of 2018. Bon-ton closed both stores in April 2018. Altitude Trampoline Park opened in the former Circuit City on November 2nd 2018. GameStop closed in late 2019. On August 7th 2019, Zoo Health Club opened in former Bon-ton/Sage Allen. Village Idiots would temporarily close on March 22nd 2020 but never reopened. Sears closed on February 17th 2020. Bath and Body Works closed on January 22nd 2022. In February 2022 all interior stores of the mall had to close in 30 days. Some stores that had to close were Hatbox Theater, The Jeweler's Workbench, Mountain Goods, and Verizon. In September 2022 the mall's interior closed. On December 8th 2022 All-Stars Pickleball opened in the former Old Navy/party rental. Talbots and Chico's closed in late 2022. Regal closed on April 18 2024. In October 2023 developers purchased the mall and Regal cinema next door and proposed that most of the mall would be demolished for apartments, Costco, and other retail stores. In July 2024 the plans were approved and demolition is to start sometime in 2025. The only stores that will remain from the mall are JCPenny and the former Stienbach which only houses Altitude. The plans also say the Zoo Health Club will move into the former Bon-ton store next to Altitude. as of may 2025 their has been another delay with the project.
