Have you ever played a game that doesn’t scream out “scary”, but has scary things in it?
Your answer may vary (“Hella” “Nah” “You on one, homie?”) but if the game in question is Monster Hunter, then it kinda already makes sense. I mean, we’ve seen a giant leech and a giant fucking spider, what else could there--
Oh hey, it’s a big red do-
...WHY DOES IT HAVE NO SKIN?!
IS THAT THING EATING ROTTEN MEAT?!
THAT CLAW’S AS BIG AS MY FOREARM!
Meet Odogaron, one of the many unsettling monsters in Monster Hunter. You encounter this big, red, zombie dog in a place that is equally disgusting: a land called Rotten Vale, which could easily be seen as a sort of monster graveyard.
On an ecological standpoint, it’s quite a marvel to behold...if not for how dead it looked. Being a monster graveyard, you’d find various monsters and critters there that help break down the monsters that fall to their deaths here. You can see various bodies of monsters from above down below to the murky depths of the Vale, in which they’ll crumple sickeningly. One monsters finds these, picks them up, and carries them away: Odogaron.
It feeds on carrion; more specifically, that of large monsters. And if the monster ain’t dead yet, then holy hell will it make sure it is. One of the most violent monsters in world, it will attack anything, even monsters bigger than it, up to and including Elder Dragons. It can be quite relentless in its pursuit of flesh...especially when it’s angry.
And just the sight of the thing is enough to unnerve someone. Firstly, it’s all muscle...litereally, all...fuggin...muscle. You wouldn’t think it looks terribly out of place in something like DOOM (or perhaps in one of Capcom’s other horror series.). If that doesn’t grab you, it’s eyes will. It’s piercing blue eyes are sunken into its eye sockets. The way how it’s skin is pulled back around its eyes makes it look horrifically demonic. Then if it gets fiery enough to want to attack you, you’d have to contend with its claws...two sets of them. There’s a reason as to why you’re very likely to bleed against this thing.
This thing is an unholy monster of doom that you have to fight...while you may eventually get used to seeing it and fighting it, there’s just a few things about it that’s just unsettling. Fitting that this comes from one of the creepiest places in Monster Hunter World.
...Gods, this game is creepy O_O...at least it’s theme is cool...and a lil creepy...
