Step right up and have a look…
...it's time fo--
AW, HELL NAH!!!!
So yeah, apparently when we weren't looking, there was not one, but TWO Yamishibai seasons (with the second one JUST finishing up.). Not only is our favorite (I used that term loosely) masked asshole is back, it looks like he's got a few new tricks up his sleeve when it comes to his story telling. I'll be your guide through the 4th season while Dio'll take on the 5th season; we're gonna do what we can to tackle both of em. Are ya'll ready? 'Cause I'm not D:.
TongueNo, not THAT kind (You wouldn't want that in this series, anyway D: )
So this story is about a man doing right by a cat whom had just been killed on the road, most likely hit by a car. A couple of kids spot it, and the man, whom was on his way home from work, didn't have the heart to leave it be, so he picked it up off the road and buried it.
SO! A couple of new things here: Firstly, there's narration by the man, giving it that classic feel of orally telling a strange tale. Secondly, THERE'S (BRIEF) LIVE-ACTION FOOTAGE IN THESE! You may think “Why live-action? This is a paper theater.” and while that is true, think about what your imagination does to stories as they are told. Theater of the mind is a powerful thing...especially when it tends to run wild…
ANYWAY, back to the story. When he's resting back at home, he hears a soft “Meow”. Now, he thinks it's his imagination, but he can't not shake the words that he heard from a couple of schoolgirls passing him by; that things follow you back home should you take pity on them.
Well...let's just say that they're right...And as he sleeps, something licks him. But there's more there than just the cat…
Fish TankNoticing something different? Different voice. Did the Masked ma...no the mask itself, possess someone else? We already have an idea of what this thing can do since the last season, is it doing it more now? Shiiiiet D:
Questions for later, story time now. So, middle school kids investigate a spooky-ass Western Style house. All the entrances were locked, save for an open window on the second floor. The lead kid, whom was curious about this house, is boosted up to the second floor. It was dark and quiet, save for a...bubbling sound in the room. Pulling down the curtains (literally), he spies a grimy, foul, algae covered fish tank. It's...constantly bubbling. When he gets closer, something bumps against the glass. And as he gets more curious about the tank, he finds a chair and looks inside…
Let's just say that when his friends arrive in the room...he's not there anymore.
Sewing Shears Different voice guiding us for this story of a young college student who just moved into a new apartment. It was on the cheap side, much to her delight. She was going to ignore the minor issues it had, until she noticed a floorboard in the kitchen that was different from the others. She lifted it up and found...sewing shears piercing an ofuda in the dirt. Inside of said ofuda was...dark hair. Thinking nothing of it, she tossed it in the trash (DA FUQ, WHY!? D: ).
That night, she heard something coming from the floorboard...it sounded a lot like heavy breathing. Checking the floorboard was a mistake as...something was looking back up at her. It was at that point that she woke up.
So yeah, nightmare, right? Nothing under the floorboard, right? Everything seems fine except for one thing: Where are the scissors?
So yeah, with the narration and the live-action footage, this season's lookin to deliver it's horror a bit differently. I daresay, it's an effective turn, and if you want to check them out, the links are down below!
