Ok. So in the last article, I actually said I was gonna bum rush the checklist from the funpack, and seeing as how work is no longer an excuse, I shoved all that awesomeness into one night. So let's see how we did!
FIRST POINT OF ORDER: "watch a horror movie or Halloween special you've never seen before". Ok, not that hard, considering I've really been spare lately watching movies and tv.
So we popped on a special dvd we picked up at Target (pronounced: "TAR-zjay") for the paltry and appropriate sum of $13. Of the recent cartoons I've seen (and by recent, I mean like, the last time I sat down with Cartoon Network was like 2 years ago), I have to say I fucking love Regular Show. And this dvd made me love it even more. The special I decided on was the 2-parter seen here (its the first of 2), and HOLY SHIT, THIS WAS WTF BATSHIT INTENSE. No joke, guys, this special had me rolling, followed by my jaw hitting the floor in amazement on what you can put into a cartoon these days. So amazing was the episode that I need to dedicate a later article to it. Fucking LOVE this show.
And I bought it for the 2 eps "Grave Sights" and "'Ello Gov'nor", and that was worth the price of admission alone.
But enough of my gushing, let's continue. POINT 2. Easier said than done, with our California weather not being able to make up its mind between crisp fall and blazing summer. Whatevs. Let's just go for a walk and scare ourselves silly.
PICS or it didn't happen. Our neighborhood is rather suburban and pedestrian by east coaster's standards, mostly cuz of the fact that I always equate fall and spookiness and neighborhoods with like Massachusetts. Why? Cuz Lovecraft Country, that's why.
Still, even with a rather nice phone camera, these pics came out positively dripping with darkness. I had one of those cheap, Made in China LED flashlights and that thing was so damn cheap, 2 of the bulbs were flickering or were out. I mean, I thought LEDs didn't do that or didn't do it within 3 MONTHS OF BUYING IT. Then again, most of the ones in that box were corroded, so I shoulda known. Some of these places are actually documented on my lomohome in analogue, so compare and see what some of those pleasant looking places look like in the dark.
Down right creepy actually.
Sometimes we'd see some bugs go scurrying around on the sidewalk. I dunno if they're cockroaches or just big beetles, but they had me tap-dancing like a puss and squealing like a kid at a Wiggles concert.
A neighbor las this tiny bush trimmed to look like a deer, and while its cute in the day, at night it kinda looks sinister. Like if I turn around, that fucker's gonna raise its head, point its bloodshot eyes in my direction and charge me like a bull at a couple taking wedding photography.
And thank god I'm not in Australia.
By the grace of my cheap chinese flashlight, you can see it, otherwise it was lost in the sea of sickly orange streetlights and shadows.
Someone once told me about a folk proverb or something to that effect about trees. They say you should never shine your lights in a tree, lest you find something looking down at you.
I can safely say that I spent more time looking in the trees than anything else on my street. Most of my shots were devoured by the darkness, but this one was decent. Don't see nothing….so far.
THIS fucker's been hanging out in this neighbor's yard year-round for about 2 years. Most of the time, he's turned with his back to the street, but I guess he knows what time its gonna be soon, and made sure we all knew it. I saw him both times, but the boyfriend missed him on the first pass, so by the second, it was a little of a shock.
Wasn't hard to pretend it was spookier than it was.
Bastard.
Anyhow. That's the few pics I took with the phone. Got a few analogues but those'll have to wait til I finish my roll and get it developed. Ahhhh, what an expensive hobby I have. @_@
Next point!
I once had a dream about these lil blobby monster creature things….it was a vague dream but when I woke, I tried to draw what they looked like right after. The sketch is elsewhere, but I decided to draw one of them in color.
(Note, better scan tomorrow @_@)
Since it was aquatic in nature, I put it in a lil fishbowl and gave it a seashell castle. Looking back on it, I should make some sort of story to go with it, but until then, this pic will be a good foundation. I kinda wish I saw more of that dream to know what the monster thingy would turn out to be.
I guess my natural medium is cute…I'm not too good at making scary monsters. XD
NEXT POINT. Ok, I do admit, being a horror aficionado, its kinda hard to find something I know "little" about. In fact, I generally do this every week on horror movies. Cuz I like spoiling myself and planning on which movie to watch next based on its wikipedia.
To that end, I ended up doing about, oh, 6 different franchises and characters just for the hell of it. But for the purpose of this article, I narrowed it down to a series I probably won't finish but am glad I saw at least 1 in its franchise.
And no, it wasn't the first one. I was lucky (?) enough to catch its sequel:
Why? I caught it on Synth's stream when he had his justintv account for MST3k. And I'm fairly certain we were watching it because Reb "CHUCK BUTTSTEAK DAVE RYDER" Brown was in it, along side a rather apologetic Christopher Lee.
Bonus points for counting Reb's Space Mutiny screaming.
Did you know, according to the wiki for the second film, "in 1990, when Lee was cast in Gremlins 2: The New Batch one of the first things he did was apologize to director Joe Dante (who also directed The Howling) for being in this film". I kinda wonder of Lee does that often…but then I recall him being Fu Manchu….
Maybe I should have stuck w/ the REC series.
NEXT POINT.
OK.
The kitchen table seems legit. Its the focal point of the house.
NEXT POINT
Figured that is pretty hideous enough….Sadako's selfie.
LAST POINT: pumpy-kin smelling thingy.
Well, we decided to drop by Target for the candy and stuff, so candles were on the list. I have a sister who works at one and she caught us and led us to these fun lil baubles:
wood wick candles. Apparently, when one lights them up, the wick creates a crackling sound, like a lil mini fire, in addition to making the house smell like pumpkin and cookies.
I gotta say I like it, and while I'm more of a sharp fruit scent kinda gal, I rather like this. The mini fire sounds adds to the feeling that fall is coming, even if the weather doesn't show it (I mean, seriously people, worst drought ever, every year, and then on top of that, it rained TWICE in the last maybe week, barely, when the last time it rained here was like in APRIL).
SO, there's the checklist, but here's a few lil extra tidbitties.
Before we went to Target for the candle and candy, our neighborhood kitties were out on the porch. My dog CODY hates them, but they're cute lil black cats. Perfect for Halloween.
KITTIES.
So Twix makes ghost shaped candy?? WUT.
Let's open this bad boy UP.
Well…I guess they're ghost shaped, but they're more like a printed image or embossed than actually SHAPED. More like uneven ovals with ghosts writhing on it.
Not that I DIDN'T eat them. Cuz Twix are redonk tasty. I totally ate both of them.
With my laptop saying its 11:30, I think I barely made the September cut off. XD I SO LAZY.
Hope you all are ready for this month! We're kicking off the October Halloween Countdown with a guest author tomorrow! Look forward to it!
