A bright, tranquil place. Rolling green, white and multi-colored fields. A castle sitting in the center of a beautiful lake. Wonderful hedge, nigh impeccable in their care, dot the path. The perfect place for a wondrous stroll.
Then the giggling starts. You begin to think, “Oh, there must be kids playing about.” and you begin to follow them around. Over one hill, behind a large tree you follow…unaware of the giant, walking, thorny rose with dangerously alluring lady in the center. Or the abnormally large butterfly, hungry for new prey. Or past the statue of a large flower basket…that begins to turn in your direction.
All of this you are oblivious to as your follow the giggling. You round another hedge, thinking you have found them…and then your finally get a closer look at the *front* of them. You begin to realize these hedges are oddly Hume sized. Their eyes and mouth open in a state of surprise. And you realize there are others. Dwarven sized. Eleven sized. And then the giggling surrounds you. And you hear a voice.
“Your so much fun! You play with us so well! Won’t you keep playing with us? …Forever…?” The moment the question comes, you realize too late that it’s not a question, but a statement. A declaration. And then, tiny lights dance above your head. And more come, and more dance, and the giggling becomes cacophonous until suddenly your sight darkens and your limbs stiffen.
And you never realized that you’ve become another hedge in the Fae’s garden.
Welcome to Il Mheg!
…okay, that might have been surprisingly dark, but this is a bright, dark place! It drives one crucial point home: Don’t fuck with the fae!
In terms of locations in FFXIV: Shadowbringers, Il Mheg is the second place you go to. After rescuing Minfilia(?) from the Eulmorian army and reuniting with Thancred, you escape into Il Mheg, a place that not even they will follow. You don’t know it yet, but Urianger is there, and his presence there is what stays the Fae’s hand. What do I mean by that?
Well it means that they won’t topiary you on sight.
The bright land is surprisingly deadly, and it’s not just due to the classical pixies. There are faeries that live in the water, known as the Fuath, that live in their own underwater kingdom in the lake…that used to be an Elezen (or in the 1st, elven) kingdom, not unlike Ishgard.

The enemies surrounding it are something out of Alice’s nightmares. Walking plants, terrifying drakes, sentient flower baskets and bears morphed and mutated, with no firm explanation as to how; all of them dot the land.
And while you do meet other fae that are friendly-including doglike fae and large sentient birds-you should also realize that they are under the rule of a king, located in a castle atop a hill in the center of the lake. Normally benevolent, by the time you get there, Light has corrupted them, and you have to contend with someone whom provides a surprising scare to a normally non-scary game.
If you don’t believe them to be horrific and dangerous, then feel free to watch this cutscene when their land is properly invaded…and you’ll grow to understand why…
…you don’t *Fuck* with the Fae.
