Today we're gonna take a look at another Siren manga, this time by artist Daijiro Morohoshi. This comic comes from the second book, Siren 2 Maniacs, whoich is based on the second game. The Maniacs books are chockfull of information and concept art on the games, and if you have a comprehensive understanding of the Japanese language, they're perfect for any Siren fan. If you don't, there's a lovely site, FFTranslations, that has parts of the maniacs books translated.
This short manga concerns a young man, Tatsuo, who has lingering memories of mermaids, along with his sister, whom went missing many years ago. His mother is reticent about their old hometown, and with his father gone, his only source of answers is this tiny coastal town.
Tatsuo also appears to have vestigial memories relating to the sound of sirens; he gets terrible migraines whenever he hears them as well as a sense of terror that he assumes is related to his sister, and the mermaids.
He makes his way, unbeknownst to his mother, back to the tiny village, to find out what happened to her all those years ago. When he gets there, all he finds are villagers that insist they don't remember him, and a shrine master that tries to keep him from a coastal cave that he remembers from his sister's disappearance.
Are the shrine, the cave, the memory of mermaids and his sister related somehow? As Tetsuo ventures deeper into the dark secrets of the town, he finds himself getting closer and closer to true horror.
The artwork is much different than the last comic I reviewed earlier. While Ito-san's lines are very strong and full of life, Morohoshi has a much different energy. his poses and framing isn't ground breaking, yet they perfectly serve the unsettling atmosphere that the Siren series has. The line work is very clear and reminds me slightly of wood block illustrations.
Again, its a rather short comic, around 24 pages, but its a great little one-shot comic for Siren fans.
