When I was told about and lent a House of Leaves to read, I was told one major thing:
“Don’t read this at night.”
“Why?”
“It’ll fuck with you.”
Come to think of it, this is a common occurrence.
Remember what happened with Jaws?
Not only were peeps scared to go in the ocean, shark hunting became a thing, because it was thought that the lot of em were bloodthirsty maneaters. In reality, however, they’re pretty much avoidant of humans, them not being their choice of food. Shark attacks are also fairly low; deaths even lower.
Now what about houses?
Well, lest it’s haunted and built poorly, houses aren’t dangerous at all! They’re meant to be inviting, welcome places which folk can enjoy settling in. It’s a place to have various gatherings and functions throughout your stay there. However, if you’re unfamiliar with the house, be it due to its size, acoustics, what have you, you might be a bit intimidated…perhaps nervous. More so if your imagination tends to run wild.
Which will happen when reading House of Leaves.
What you thought was one person’s name is in reality, another.
What you thought you read, was something else entirely, but suddenly changed.
Text starts to become jumbled.
The narration starts to get away from itself.
And actual. Gaping. Holes will start to appear.
…Or so I’ve seen so far!
Quiet hallways suddenly start to feel deafening.
Dark hallways become extra dark.
Footsteps begin to echo with each step taken.
As you’re left with your own thoughts, nestled in the house that is your brain.
It actually reminds me of things like Marble Hornets and other ARGs, which already work to alter your perception of the world. If the creators are working on something alongside their works, even better! Come to think of it, I wouldn’t be surprised if this didn’t serve as a bit of inspiration! Luckily you’re safe in your house when you’re watching some of these or reading the book itself, otherwise it can be a little bit freaky.
Your ears keen in on the slightest shift in the wind…the slightest movement.
And pray you don’t feel something hot and close at the back of your neck.
…Or I could be just fucking with you!
C’mon, tis the season, you know? It’s been a bit since we’ve gotten back into the swing of things, a bit of joshing n’ joking wouldn’t be too bad, yea? S’not like we’re bringing anything in here, we’re just talking about Warped Perceptions! They do tend to pop up, oftentimes through movies, games, but for me, it’s been a while since it’s popped up in a book!
If you’ve yet to give it a looksee, do give House of Leaves a go. But I must echo what I’ve been told: Don’t read this at night, It’ll fuck with you.
N’ you might bring something back with you.
Or not!
