Hello, survivor!
So you've made it through the whole week, huh? Congrats! I bet you've got a fair amount of food, some arrows, some good clothes to keep you warm, and a solid house that you fixed up a little bit and made livable. I bet you've also taken the time to smack some zombies around too, both as a necessity to survive, and perhaps for a little catharsis as well, given the situation you're in. Hope you've gotten the chance to really know the lay of the land that you call home, cause it's pretty easy to get lost out there. Well, don't let me take too much of you're time, I know it's getting late, an…
Wait...why is the sky red? No, not dusk orange, I mean...red, red.
And is that lightning?!
And why do those zombies sound…...angrier?
Folks, welcome to 7 Days to Die horde night, which is what gives this game its name-stay.Every seven days, a zombie horde comes at night, and you best hope that you're actually prepared for that when it comes. Ideally, you would've hopefully figured out how to defend yourself against zombies at night, especially while you're at home. Holing up in a home means that your house is at least upgraded a few tiers, in terms of defense, you have enough traps to surround your house, and you have means of shooting down zombies from the outside. Yes, this means that you need to have your bow (or if you're extra lucky, a pistol) ready to go, because getting swarmed by this horde could mean instant death.
When you're just starting out, the only traps that are afforded to you are spike traps, both the big, thick kind and the haphazard kind. You'll find that one of them (the haphazard kind) is much stronger than the other (the thick kind). However, it doesn't last as long, so alternating them isn't a bad idea for a perimeter defense. Maybe a few inside wouldn't be a bad idea either, as starting out, you may not have enough to fully stave off the horde, and you'd have to be prepared for their inevitable breaching of your defenses. By the time you've reached the 7th day, you would've most likely leveled up a few times. Purchasing skills to help with either making stronger traps or hitting harder with your weapons is a good idea when preparing for hell to break loose. I, however, found that having more stamina for a horde night is a godsend, because if they break through and you have to start swinging with your weapon, you'll start to get increasingly tired until you can't run anymore. Best to have a little kick in your step when the night comes.
Oh, and unlike other nights, don't even bother with trying to use your stealth to hide; when the 7th day comes, zombies know where you are, and will home in on your location, thrashing towards you until either they, or you, die. It's possible to use this to your advantage, but not without a bit of cleverness and further experience.
As you progress through the game, and get higher in level, you'll start seeing different zombies on horde night. I'll highlight a few:
ScreamersThese stringy, raven-haired zombies scream their heads off when they see you. When this happens, they summon a few zombies towards your location; or worse, they can summon a small horde to you. They can show up during a horde night, in which if they see you, they will scream, thus having MORE come your way. They can even summon other screamers your way, and it can chain, and chain, and chain, until you just want to die.
Spider Zombies True to their name, they climb up and over obstacles. If their limbs don't get destroyed, they're determined to climb up to your location. It may not look like a fully programed climb, but know that when they start moving up walls is the time you should start moving AWAY from said wall. To make matters worse, they're always crouched, making them harder to hit.
Police Zombies Do what you can to kill these fat sonsofbitches. Why? Once a Boomer zombie takes enough damage that it's near death, it doubles over for a split second before exploding. Not only could this potentially kill you outright, but it ill absolutely wreck your defenses and your house. Unless you have concrete buildings, a police zombie is a sure fire way to lose your house unless you can kill it quickly; which is why there's such a panic for it when it arrives.
Now I'm pretty deep in the game, so while horde nights still make me nervous, I've got enough stuff to deal with hordes as they come through. When I was just starting out, however, horde nights were terrifying. Not only did I not have the luxury of hiding from a horde, but the sounds that I hear during those night are incredibly unssettling…
And they go on through the night…
Once again, this game is still in beta, but feel free to take a look at various videos of some zombie slaying and horde surviving, take a peek through the many archives of the internet. I do believe you'll have a fun time with this game.
Very Recommended, that it is!
