I miss trick or treating. I miss the costumes, the hours on foot with flashlights and friends, and of course, the candycandyCANDY. Going door to door for free sweets....ah, the joys of youth. When I was REEEALLLLLY young, I can barely remember when it was still ok to get cookies and popcornballs and drinks before the paranoia and a few bad apples ruined it for all of us and made it so we can't have nice things. My grandmother would actually serve kids and their parents hot cider and cookies during that magical night. Of course, such days are long gone.
But that doesn't mean we here at Random Lunacy don't like sweets. So Decon and I are gonna wander down the candy trailed memory lane and talk about some of our fav candy booty from trick or treats gone by.
Candy Corn
Dio: Its the icon of the Halloween month (in fact, its National Candy Corn Day on the 30th!). You either hate it or love it, and there is no in between. I used to be pretty indifferent to them, but one day, I had a few...and then a few more...and then most the day was done and I nearly finished the bowl. There's something about the sweetness in it; not too sugary, not too honey-ish, resistant to the bite.... Apparently when they were first made, their tri-color design was revolutionary. Its barely changed from the time it was created til now, over 100 years, and I say, "if it ain't broke, don't fuck with it". XD Here's a short post on the candy.
Decon: I don't very often get a chance to try it- last time I did was when my cousin and her fiancee' brought a tube back for me when they went to New York a few christmasses back. You don't really find it here outside of specialised stores. But I do quite like it. It's a mottled and, for lack of a better word, subtle sweet. It's sweet, but it's not overpowering. That's how I tend to like my sweets and candies personally, compared to the sugar-overload of things like icing. It's...very tough to eat, though, from what I remember. It's rock hard in texture when you first pop it in your mouth.
Dio: XD!!! Only if you get them stale.
Decon: Mine were stale then. 8D
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups
Dio: OMG, this was and is my favorite chocolate treat. If you got the full sized pack of 2 in your bag, you were a GOD. XD The little bitty ones are acceptable, but more dangerous: you could plow through the equivalent of a whole bag if you weren't looking. I love the combo of a saltier peanut butter to offset the smooth milky chocolate. I like my salty-sweet combos, which is why I adore sea salt caramels. Reese's cups are hella hype. XD They come in different varieties, like dark chocolate, and some have caramel...they're all good to me, and I don't even like dark chocolate.
Decon: They're pretty damned good from what I remember. I have to be honest and say they weren't terribly different from the peanut butter chocolates you can get over here, but I adore peanut butter and chocolate together, so they were a winner for me. They were different insomuch as they were peanut butter cups, mind. Those aren't common over here. Most peanut butter chocolates are your typical chocolate bars. You could get peanut butter KitKat Chunky's, for example, but they were sadly limited edition. They may still be around in some non-chain corner stores though.
Dio: Those sound....delicious. 8.
Decon: They are, increadibly so. If you come across one at any point, I highly reccomend them.
Parma Violets
Decon: It's one I know (or am at least 99.9% sure) you won't have tried. These (and your bog standard "fizzy candies" which come in a similar style and are made by the same company) often turn up as Halloween staples over here. Less due to being thematically appropriate and more because they're cheap and you get a decent amount in a single pack. They're, again, kind of a mottled sweetness rather then something that creates a sugary orgasm in your mouth. I dunno what to compare the flavour too but I'd go with "kinda like vanilla but not as creamy". Which is paramount to saying "generically sweet" I know, but there we go. It's cheap sweeties, basically; barely any "natural" flavors and almost entirely just pure sugar and sweetner. I do quite like them, though, and though they're not very filling if not snacked on in bulk, I was never dissapointed to find a few packets stuffed in my goody bags after a haul.
Dio: They look like Sweet Tarts, but they sound like....NOT Sweet Tarts. XD
Decon: XD Honestly, I can't think of anything to compare them too. They're just... Parma Violets. Whatever flavor they are, it's a weak one. Pure pound-store fodder.
Dio: They just ARE XD
Decon: Yeah XD
Chupa Chups
Dio: So...Chupa Chups. They're standard in treat bags, doctor's offices, and store counters. They come in a lot of flavors, including cotton candy. I like them, but I prefer the sharper fruit flavors like strawberry or watermelon than cotton candy. Decon, you're not a lollipop fan, I take it?
Decon: Not a huge one, no, but I'll never turn down a Chupa Chup if offered one.
Dio: It means like...sucker in spanish. How...appropriate XD
Decon: pft XD
Black Jack Chews
Decon: These are fairly common Halloween treats, although again they're not really thematically related. They get points for coming in black and red packaging though. They're chewy sweets with a licorice flavor. I cannot count how many times these things wound up in my hauls in the past. If it wasn't these, it was the 'fruit punch' chews made by the same company, Barratts, and in the times when it wasn't the fruit punch ones, I was sorely disappointed. Especially because nine times out of ten it was Black Jacks. Good if you like chews and licorice, otherwise, you're shit out of luck.
Dio: Licorice....damn, that's hit or miss XD I wouldn't say no to them since ive never had them...but normally black licorice isn't high on my tasty list.
Decon: You know how I feel about licorice or aniseed tasting things (outside of Jaeger bombs) so I shan't repeat myself XD My next one'll be something I actually like. It just wouldn't feel right if I didn't mention the bastard things seeing as how I'd often get 'em.
Dio: OH! so like...banana flavored Laffy Taffy. XD
Decon: That's a common Halloween treat over there? Shit, I'd have taken those over black jacks XD
Caramel Apple Pops
Dio: I love these. But I love caramel! Basically a granny smith/green apple flat lollipop covered in a layer of sticky caramel. Its the fairest equivalent to having a real one, only they never get grainy and you don't have to cut them, like real ones. XD They're usually available nowadays year round, but they're much easier to find around October.
Decon: God DAMN, those sound good. >_> But they look, however, like the eggs of something not of this earth (or universe), that once whatever lays festering inside is born will wreck hells upon us unsuspecting humans the likes of which we could never imagine. Still, I'm from the "don't judge food by it's looks" school of "not being a fussy eater", so I'm guessing they taste a hell of a lot better then they look.
Dio: XD!! They basically taste like what they purport to be. Caramel and apple taste.
Drumstick Chews
Decon: I think this particular version of the sweet I linked are chews in packs, but these are usually, as the name implies, are found as a form of...well, they're not lollipops, but they come on sticks. They're actually very, very chewy sweets. Industrial-grade metal-teeth-possibly-required chewy. They're kinda fruity, kinda generically sweet, but the flavor is stronger then, say, the Parma Violets I mentioned earlier. They're, again, pretty damn cheap, hence the prevelance. They're ok; I'm not a lover, but I wouldn't turn one down. Again, I tended to get so many that that's why they stick out the most in my memory. That's the buzzword for most Halloween favorites over here; cheap.
Dio: They sound like Now and Laters; cheap and chewy, but hard as hell. XD
Now we both hope you have lots of imaginary cavities 8D!
