It’s come to my attention that after ten years since it came out, we have yet to talk about Left 4 Dead, or the series as a whole. I thought it’d be a good idea to talk about a game in which four of your friends try to fight through a city, town, or even the woods in order to escape to freedom...well, as free as it can be. Spanning two games, and about 5 campaigns a piece with multiple parts, and having multiple gameplay modes, Left 4 Dead 2 is a series that keeps on giving, even well into today.
I could talk about the entire series for this one article, but there’s far too much of it for me to cover in one go, so I’ll talk about the first one. Coolly enough, the campaign set for L4D1 can also be played in L4D2 with the same survivors. It keeps everything all up in a neat package. So! Without further ado, let’s give a brief rundown on L4D1 and what it’s about just by breaking down the intro.
The game centers around four survivors: Louis, an IT analyst, Bill, an old Vietnam Vet, Zoey, a college student whom is also a movie buff, and Francis, an ornery biker. In the opening trailer, it is shown that it takes place two weeks after the first infection the group is literally crossing the street to a fire escape on top of a roof. Along they way, they hear someone crying...but in actuality, it’s someone whom is infected...and deadly. In the ensuing battle against the alerted horde, a zombie with a long “tongue” grabs Bill, whom is then quickly rescued by a dead-aye Francis.
Encouraging each other to stick together, they push through the zombies that have been alerted to their presence. Spotting a helicopter, Louis calls out to it and follows, only for it to disappear out of sight. It’s at that point he gets pounced by a zombie in a hoodie, who’s making the attempt to tear into him. Zoey saves him by pushing him off and filling him with pistol shots, before Louis lands the last shot...and sets off a car alarm.
The horde finds them again...especially a LARGE one. The party shoots and runs away from it, escaping up the fire escape, and to freedom. Louis is both relieved and surprised that they made it, while Bill remarks that they just crossed the street.
So yea; that gives you an idea of how the game’s going to go.
Each campaign has about 4 or 5 parts, each packed with zombies, twisting alleyways and trails, and pitfalls. You have various weapons, gear and wits in order to survive. But the biggest thing that’ll see you through the night? Teamwork. You’ll need it to survive.
Now, since the first game’s been released, not only has there been a sequel for it, but 5 more maps, each with varying objectives that you have to complete! The lot of that is difficult to describe in just one sitting, so I’ll be cutting this up throughout the month. That said, it’ll be quite a ride!
