Have you ever played a game that gave you intense dread and fear when you went into a new area…and you didn’t expect it?
You might have many answers to this question (“Hyah!” “Hyah…” “HYAH!??!” ), which can vary and mean different things, but that is indeed the case for the expanded world of Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom, the sequel to Legend of Zelda-Breath of the Wild. The game brilliantly layered two separate worlds on top of it’s already vast, existing world, making it an enormous, but pleasant experience to explore. The vast section in that we’re going to talk about is The Depths, which, as you can guess, is underground. But why talk about this? Hell, how did we get here?
The Depths is the world below Hyrule, once completely closed off to the greater uplands. However, when Ganondorf’s seal broke, it caused what was known as “The Upheaval”, which uprooted Hyrule Castle and causing many ruins called Zonai Ruins to fall from the sky. It also pock-marked the land, opening up deep chasms that, when descended upon, plunges Link into a world of unknown darkness, where Ganondorf’s evil is stifling.
Firstly, about this place?
IT’S DARK AS FUCK!!!
Not even kidding, without a light source, Link-and by extension, you-can barely make out anything in front of your face. You can thank the Gloom for that.
You know that red and black stuff that you saw on Calamity Ganon back in the first game? The Gloom’s similar to that, and it’s thickest in the Depths. Pure malice, this can corrupt easily, regardless of who touches it. Enemies that are encountered in the Depths are wreathed in Gloom, and thus are more dangerous than before. Why?
Anytime they hit you, your max hearts go down…semi-permanently.
Several things you encounter while in the the Depths:
Extreme Darkness
Did I mention it was dark down here? Well let me mention this again, it’s dark as FUCK down here! Those early Lightbloom seeds that you found in the Sky Ruins? Yeah, you’ll be needing them here. If you have the bigger ones, even better-the darkness is so stifling that even a small Lightbloom seed isn’t enough to fill an area comfortable enough to move through.
The perils of the dark cannot be overstated. Outside of the fact that you can’t see, the Depths have as many cliffs and valleys as the uplands do, if not more so. If you neglect to light your way and wander further in the dark, you’ll find yourself tumbling down below, and potentially to your death if you’re unprepared.
2. Froxes.
What the hell is a frox, you ask?
They’re these tiny lil gecko-like monster that are attracted to light, gulping up light sources in a flash. This includes torches…and lightbloom seeds. Yup, you have to start strategically placing your lightbloom seeds in higher areas, because the little buggers WILL eat them up.
Sometimes you’ll start lighting up the area and see a large patch of moving darkness. You heard me right. It’s as if a patch of the dark is moving…until you look closer and see that it’s not a patch of darkness: It’s a Giant Frox. Yes, they come in those sizes, and those things have an appetite. Link looking like just the prime morsel they’re looking for, they WILL try to eat him…and by him, I mean You.
3. Gloom Spawn
What the hell is Gloom Spawn? Well let me ask you a several questions. Do you like WallMasters? Do you like Gloom? Do you like both of them rapidly approaching you? If you answered “No!” to all three of these questions, well, I have some bad news for you.
Gloom Spawn-I call em Gloom Hands-come in an eerie red and black ooze with five hands, ready to grab and drain Link dry. They are Gloom incarnate, which means that if they hit Link, his max health WILL start to drain. When they come, the music becomes nightmarish, and if encountered early, it’s best to run before they fully form, else they WILL chase you down.
You know what’s worse? These buggers can also appear in the uplands, which means that Link will have to deal with the Gloom on the surface, as well as having to deal with these vile beings. What’s worse, they turn the sky red, almost like it’s a Blood Moon, and it stays like that until it’s taken down.
Speaking of taking it down…
DID YOU KNOW THAT PHANTOM GANON HIDES IN THERE?!
Yes, every time you fight Gloom Hands and take them down, you have to deal with the ghastly incarnation of Ganondorf, trying his damndest to kill you. His fighting style is awkward, but his swings are powerful, and should you get hit, that Max Health drops fast.. If encountered early, it’s entirely possible for him to one-shot Link.
A Nightmare on top of a Nightmare.
And I just wanted to build my own car…
