Me and my partner Dio- aka @humanscandrivestick - have poured a lot of time and love into E.Q. in the six years we’ve worked on it. And after a prolonged hiatus period (brought on by business and health and real life stuff and all that on both our ends), Dio put together a smashing Halloween Special this year, titled Early Water. The decision to get one more bit of art in for the countdown based on it was a no brainier; I really enjoyed the story, and both of us are excited to revisit the concepts it brings to the table again in the future.
In-keeping with the theme of naming E.Q. things after songs/albums/etc., this piece is named for the song I Just Wanted You by Izmar.
Focusing primarily on Fade was partially brought on by the desire to render the outfit Dio put together for her (although naturally, the Keds were my suggestion), partially because I designed roughs for the other outfits featured in the storing (barring Bass;, which was wholly Dio’s), and partially because Fade is a character that I really enjoy putting to paper despite finding her kind of difficult to draw. The concept for the image itself beyond that came fairly quickly too- Fade is a fairly tagic character with the backstory to match, and though she can be quite a ray of sunshine she does lend herself to sadder, ethereal images like this. I shan’t directly spoil how this image related to Early Water, but needless to say the thing holding her gently isn’t quite so... abstract in the story proper. The decision to render them in a more simple manor was mainly for better visual congruency, and so as to not completely give away the twist (likewise, the meaning of the title is obscured in the image itself). That it also saved a little bit of time and meant the image would meet the deadline for the day (well, in California time anyway- it’s 4:05 as of posting in merry olde England) was a plus, though.
