Day 1: Merry Christmas to You
Lucy heads off our calendar this year, with bold colors and minimal shading. I wanted something with blocks of color, but half way through realized I inked outlines…XD;;; As I always note, her outfit changes slightly every year, mostly because I forget details. So scatterbrained!
My favorite details are the shape of her skirt, the candy cane, and her antlers.
Lucy the winter deer belongs to me.
Day 2: Voice of Wind, Song of Time
Chronexci, goddess of cameras, was chosen for the second day. I wanted to try the blocked in technique again, from 2010's version with Coleco. This time, I added more color hatching for variety. Maybe the blue shades are too much next to the red, which brings a different kind of mind, but the green stands out very nice. The various silhouettes of camera things and other holiday shapes came out better in this attempt.
Chronexci and Captured Time belongs to me.
Day 3: Herald Angel
Fade was chosen for today, since I wanted a good close-up with really big eyes. The boys in E.Q. usually hog the spotlight (mostly because I have a preference for handsome men, of course), so I wanted to do something more gentler and sweeter. By the way, last year's E.Q. was rather bittersweet, a sad kind of story, and it came with a sad kind of image, and that's another reason to go with something warmer. The girls in the series are going to have more of a spotlight in second season/second album.
Fade's heart gloves are something I would like to have, and I usually have the tendency to draw clothes I want on my characters, if its not clothing or outfits I already have. Wish fulfillment. XD
Fade and E.Q. belongs to me.
Day 4: Seasons Greetings
Today was a super bad day for me, so trying to think of a good image was very hard. I knew I wanted something that wouldn't have a lot of white in the background, since most day 4s have a lot of white, but I didn't think I could have the heart to do something too elaborate. Gypsy, one of my android girls (which is why her skin appears dark and artificial looking, as well as her having joint lines) appears with a slightly darker dress (my pinks weren't the same as the last time I drew her @_@), and the overall composition is very simple, but it turned out nice, with the sort of yellow halo/halation around her as a border. It makes her pop out nicely. Still, it seems very half-hearted, but much more colorful, thankfully.
Gypsy and AICA belongs to me.
Day 5: Snow Days
Another year, and another Xander, as a gift for my friend. Somehow, its comforting doing Xander images because the compositions come so daily, and the picture is done quickly! If only other days were so easy. The charming parts are the snow present and Xander's expression. Just perfect.
Xander belongs to Adam Hebert.
Day 6: I Can Weather the Storm
Its been a long time since I drew Aro and Kage. They came from Pot Sticker, which actually precedes Creepy & Crawly. They started the universe, and helped codify the sorta Daemon-Human-Spirit relationship to the investigation unit. As a shonen ai series, I liked the relationship between an immortal and a human, and of course gay. Cuz I'm a girl. XD
I updated the outfit slightly, and gave Kage a new one, but I liked the cute image of someone sharing a coat on someone, especially between people with very different heights. Kage's sorta a pro to-Henri, but Henri's true love was Mei, so the relationship became different. XD Not that I would have Henri hook up with anyone on the C&C team except James (and that did happen in the end so….XD).
Aro and Kage Sakamoto and Pot Sticker belong to me.
Day 7: Visions of Sugar Plums
I went with drawing Green for this one since I hadn't yet, and she had a winter outfit, according a Game Freak new year's card. Green's really fun to draw.
I admit…there aren't really any sugar plums…I just liked the title.
Green and Pokemon belong to Nintendo.
Day 8: A Christmas Spirit
Since things are picking up, I wanted something nice and subtle, and of course easy. So I went to my default valentine style with outlines, shading and a touch of color. NiGHTS has been giving his spotlight to the kids in recent years, so I wanted to try drawing him again.
Back to cookies. @_@
NiGHTS and Christmas NiGHTS belong to Sega.
Day 9: I Wonder as I Wander
In the end, I realized the pencils are really good, so I only ended up inking the ornament. The entire pic was hard to do so I shot some reference, but I think the labor of love is really obvious from the effort in it. The chucks I used are my christmas chucks.
Day 10: Toyland
Back to Mei for the charming and elegant images. She's doing double duty this year, though you'll find Mei in her Future form from the sequel series appearing in the 12 Tracks project this year. You'll find both Meis VERY different. XD
I used this style with Akiva last year on the 3rd, but I tried to go looser, and bolder with line work. Instead of a background, I actually flicked paint and it turned out nice. I think I can go even looser XD!
Mei Asakawa and Creepy & Crawly belong to me.
Day 11: Snowflake
I went with an Animal Crossing girl (ok, its Hana, the flower girl swap of the human/villager XD), and made her match the background….it didn't come out exactly as I wanted but I like the composition. Very framed and vibrant.
Hana and Animal Crossing belong to Nintendo.
Day 12: Dreaming of Christmas
Rya heads up a nice simple image. I love doing this sorta weird pattern with shapes, candy canes, boxes, etc. I first used it with Arthur in 2010 and break it out every now and again for times when I need a lot of fanciness with minimal effort. XD I miss my older markers, which were lighter generally, but this darker blue makes her dress look more like its made of velvet instead of cotton.
Rya Li. St. John and Neo Black 9 belong to me.
Day 13: Cookie
Dio and cookies…. Pretty much my life in December.
These days, I've been trying to color in Dio's skin closer to my own, under Decon's suggestion, but I gotta say. I'm a bitch to blend in color. @_@
Dio Maxwelle belongs to me.
Day 14: Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow
I decided to bring back collages, since its been awhile and they make for wonderful images when you use pretty paper. I chose this pretty sea foam teal with a storm of snow, and had to think of someone with a good holiday outfit palette that would match it.
Gretchen has only appeared one other time with the main cast of Misfit Demons, and she and Mordecai both have this matching teal skin (despite the fact they're different species, a gorgon and a half-demon respectively), so she seemed to fit. I like how it came out in the end, though I was doubtful I could cut around her snake pigtails. It turned out they weren't that complicated in shape.
Gretchen the gorgon and Misfit Demons belong to me.
Day 15: Winter Picture
I took another stab at the sketchy fine liner shading style, and it actually came out nicely. I felt more in control this time around. The lines feel stronger and more confident. I also scanned it in with a cooler lean to the color, because I usually scan so the colors come out warmer. I think it makes the picture shine better.
I did Yuna because I wanted someone with a camera, and I did Mei already. I gave her a sort of off-shoot of the Nikon Coolpix, in red, cuz I actually have one, and its a sexy red. XD Her digital camera is essential to her story, but I never asked Decon if she had a definite type of digital camera for her game, but I think this one suits her very well.
Yuna Asaka and Barnbellows Estate belong to Decon.
Day 16: O Holy Knight
Beowulf is new this year, from a new magical girl series I'm working on called Our Ladies of War. Each magical girl, or Queen, fights monsters and lead their countries, using weapons and pieces of armor from a legendary Queen thousands of years ago. Each Queen is based off of historical and mythical hero or leader, like Alexander the Great, Oda Nobunaga, or Ghengis Khan and even more mordern leaders like General Patton. Why? Because its an excuse to design magical girls willy-nilly, that's why.
Beowulf's design has fluctuated greatly, and as of now has no concrete henshin design, but her basic look, with her 2-toned hair and pink eyes, are charming. Her holiday outfit is meant to be more wintery. I chose to do this in the style of Alphonse Mucha, an artist that inspired many a shoujo manga-ka, and I think I did a decent job, since the 16th is my strongest day. I think I could go farther, but so far, its a fun style to try.
Beowulf and Our Ladies of War belong to me.
Day 17: Its Christmas Time Again
The Distance pic today should have the twins, I decided. JP usually has the monopoly on the calendar for the winter season because of the winter special, but I think its about time the twins get more facetime.
The orange background looks nice for the blues. The boys are always so adorable to draw, its a wonder I don't do it more often anymore.
Oak and Ash Winchester and Boulevard of Distance belong to me.
Day 18: A Marshmallow World
This image is one I've been planning for a long time. I had a preliminary sketch of this since last year, with only a few girls to try out for the slot, and in the end, I didn't have time to do it last year. I nearly didn't have time this year, with all the other slots filling up. I knew I needed time to work out the perspective and blocking to make it work, since its a difficult pose. So Aina made the cut since I knew I wanted a cute girl for the cute pose, and someone with good flowy hair. This image is much closer to her color intention, which sadly I wasn't able to do for her appearance in the 12 Tracks project this year, with her golden honey colored hair, rather than just brown. Her sweater is also a little more deep in color, but my markers have trouble scanning for that. In spite of all that, I'm happy to finally be able to do the image to my satisfaction.
Aina Fidela and Ragnatropolis belong to me.
Day 19: Merry Christmas
Another image related to the usual christmas episode for E.Q., this one really made me proud. I decided to do this one in the style of Natsume Ono, in particular the covers for her Ristorante Paradiso spin-off/sequel/prequel Gente, which is my favorite manga. I did a nice sketchy line art with solid colors. I went with pencils for a softer look (kinda reminiscent of last year's holiday special image), and used their image colors. Red for Felipe, blue for Arpeggio and green for Galliard, a character that has been mentioned but hasn't been introduced yet (in last year's christmas special and a short piece in album/season 1). He's important for the next arc coming up, so I decided it was time to start doing art of him.
Since its basically the best Felipe and Arpeggio I have done almost ever, I also scanned in the line art as a bonus. It looks so nice either way.
Felipe, Arpeggio and Galliard and E.Q. belong to me.
Day 20: Un Flambeau Jeanette Isabelle
Happy birthday, Isabelle (and Digby)! Thanks to the Animal Crossing Plaza on the WiiU, we know a lot of the special characters' birthdays.
I had Ichi go fetch her a present. To me I think that's Ichi's type: the slightly clumsy but sweet girl next door. XD
I used the same design of the festive dress on Isabelle, and went with a style halfway between my usual style and closer to the actual renders. She looks really cute that way.
Isabelle and Villager (Ichi) and Animal Crossing: New Leaf & Super Smash Bros. belong to Nintendo.
Day 21: Happy Birthday!
Its my sister's birthday, and since I drew her as Link (she loves Zelda), I decided she can be Sailor Moon this year. I like how Tinkerbell as Luna turned out.
Day 22: Melting the Ice
A rare picture of Lunis without a hat on. I almost forgot to have him appear this year, with all the chaos. Lunis' default outfit isn't as red, but he does have a long cap like his holiday one. He appeared in most of his default outfit in Decon's mini album The Amineptine Smile, where he also appears hatless.
His hair color actually changes color as he changes outfits, since different outfits go with different forms he gains during his story. Here, his hair color is subtly changing from his usual white and violet to the holiday red.
For some reason, last year's Piston Quints track, "Melt the Ice Around Your Broken Heart", came to mind as I finished it. Its not that Lunis and the artist are that deeply entwined being they come from wildly different and separate series, and maybe the connection only comes from Lunis being on the cover of one release, but for some reason he seems to fit the image and style of the tracks I know from Piston Quints. He suits the music so much I wonder if maybe the connection may be that tenuous link we call a dreamworld, or maybe its simply in my heart and mind. (By the way, the other Piston Quints track from last year perfectly fits a scene in JP's winter special story, so perhaps that quality isn't limited to just Lunis).
Lunis and Dreaming, Dreaming Dreaming belong to me.
Day 23: Holiday Warriors
So I did get my awesome Dino Drac funpack, and among the awesomely bad holiday movie and a cel from A Christmas Story (and I promise to review that before the year is out @_@), I also got a pack of Holiday Warriors, which was a DD packaged set of tiny, cheapy, vending machiney toys. A glow-in-the-dark alien, a ninja, and a dinosaur came in my pack, and I just love all 3. The packaging is what makes it awesome; if you're an X-E vet, it has a little Corporate Viscera feel to it. A really epic story to these little toys. It makes them that much more special.
I also included the Mother's Day card that was in a recent article. Just read the article and enjoy the awesomeness that is a youth's attempt to make a totally badass card for his mom (if I was a mom I think I woulda loved it XD).
Dino Drac belong to Matt @ Dinosaur Dracula
Day 24: Neighborhood Ornaments
This year was so busy, what with the late cookies, lots of work, and the amazing 12 Tracks project from Decon, its was stressful, but I can't deny it made for some great pics this year. A good strong year, which is always intimidating the following year. @_@
This year I decided on christmas ornaments. This year we only added one new series, Our Ladies of War, but we're just 2 shy of 30 series represented (twin character series this year showcased the other, so California, Toby, Ridley, and Treble this year when Ohio, Jessica, Riley, and Bass appeared last year). Its got a lot to be done, but a good rest sounds nice too right now.
Merry christmas!!
Everyone belongs to me.
