Mervyn John Scott rode 11 winners under National Hunt rules during a career that spanned most of the 1920s.
Born on March 2, 1907, his first ride, Wild Duck, finished fifth of ten runners in the Juvenile Hurdle at Ludlow on October 12, 1922. He had his initial victory on Postino in the Cowdray Maiden Hurdle on the second day of Fontwell Park’s inaugural meeting, on Thursday, May 22, 1924, winning by four lengths.
Four days later, he gained his second success when Wild Duck landed the Ledbury Selling Handicap Hurdle at Colwall Park. The pair had been second in their last three starts together so were not winning out of turn.
In 1925 he rode three winners, three seconds and five thirds from 35 rides. Two of those wins came in selling hurdles, courtesy of Wild Duck at Folkestone in April and King of Thule at Newbury in December.
His most successful season was in 1926/27, yielding four wins in the closing months, including a dead-heat when his mount, Red Ronald, and Real Royal, ridden by former champion jockey Eric Foster, could not be separated at the end of the Herefordshire Handicap Hurdle at Hereford on Easter Monday, with Welford, the mount of Howard Cheshire, just a short head behind them in third place.
Mervyn had his final victory at Cheltenham on November 14, 1929, when The Wolf, trained like most of his other winners by John Scott, beat 21 rivals to take the Cowley Maiden Hurdle on his first start of the season.
He had his final ride on Cailin Dubh, unplaced in the Syston Selling Hurdle at Leicester on February 25, 1930.
Mervyn Scott died on February 27, 1991, aged 83.
