Edgar Springate

Edgar Springate

National Hunt jockey Edgar Springate rode 54 winners in a career that spanned the 1950s and early 60s.

Edgar Albert Frederick Springate was born on September 23, 1932, He lived for a while at 44 Kingston Avenue, North Cheam, Surrey and was retained by Ron Smyth and Rene Emery, both of whom trained at Epsom.

He rode his first winner on Smyth’s Harrowful at Lingfield on December 8, 1951, surviving an objection by the rider of the runner-up on grounds of bumping after the last flight.

He won again on Harrowful at Hurst Park on March 7, 1952.

The most successful of his early associations was with Bright Link, on whichhe won twice over hurdles in November 1952 and novice chases at Cheltenham and Nottingham in October 1953. He also scored a notable victory on Rosenkavalier in Kempton Park’s Rendlesham Long Distance Hurdle on February 27, 1954.

Edgar’s banner season was 1954/55, in which he rode 11 winners. It started well with a trio of Ron Smyth-trained juvenile hurdlers, Fredette, Ross’s Slipper and Ocean Royal, who won five races between them in the first part of the season. He rode a Boxing Day double at Kempton, winning the Juvenile Hurdle on Ocean Royal and the Hounslow Handicap Hurdle on Harrowful. He landed another double at Lingfield on February 11, 1955, aboard Fredette and novice hurdler Cranacrower, (right) and won again on Fredette at Hurst Park in March.

On October 15, 1955, he married Margaret Howes, who would provide him with a son, Martyn. Two months after getting married, he won two juvenile hurdle races on the not altogether appropriately named Shotgun Wedding, first at Windsor and then the valuable Christmas Rose Hurdle at Hurst Park on December 16, 1955, this being the jockey’s biggest victory.

Edgar equalled his best season with another 11-winner haul in 1959/60, including Ron Smyth’s hurdlers Frost Warning and Mazurka, and Rene Emery’s timber toppers Indian Tint, Interrex and Sire de L’Adour II.

His last win was on Chou in the Egham Hurdle at Kempton Park on 28 January 1961.

He relinquished his licence the following season.
