Parnaby Smith

1832 - 1870

Born at Nunnington, Yorkshire in 1832, amateur rider Mr Parnaby Smith rode Inkerman, a faller in the 1863 Grand National.

He suffered a more serious fall when riding Topsy in a chase at Tadcaster on April 20, 1870. He died from his injuries four days later at Tadcaster, aged about 38, leaving a wife and four children.

At an inquest held at Tadcaster on Monday 25 April, it was stated that his mount, Topsy, struck the top bar of the last hurdle, throwing his rider headfirst into the ground. The horse then fell upon the unfortunate rider. Parnaby Smith died from an effusion of blood on the brain the following Sunday morning without regaining consciousness. The jury returned a verdict of ‘Accidentally killed.’

Parnaby Smith was buried at All Saints & St James Church, Nunnington, on April 26, 1870.
