Malcolm Smith

Former jockey Malcolm Trevor Smith died in December 2011, aged 80.

Born in Gloucestershire on March 24, 1931, his career in the saddle had spanned several decades, starting in the late 1940s when he joined top jockey Gerry Wilson as an apprentice in Andoversford.

He enjoyed his best seasons in 1955/56 & 1956/1957, riding nine winners in each. In November 1956 he rode Dealer to win the three-mile Gloucester Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham.

He rode his last winner over jumps in the 1962/63 season, aboard the Bill Marshall-trained Black Spot in the three-mile Haldon Moor Handicap Chase at Devon & Exeter on June 1, 1963.

He also scored twice on the Flat – his only two winners in that sphere – in 1963. Both were for Bill Marshall, the first being on Grecian Granite at Bogside on June 8; the second – and the final winner of his career – on Parliament Hill in the Knightwick (2yo) Maiden Plate at Worcester on June 29.
