Peter Smith

Article by Chris Pitt

Peter Gerald Smith was a National Hunt jockey between 1947 and 1953 and rode a total of 15 winners. The first of them was on Glen Cottage for Lewes trainer Bob Maxwell in division one of the Amberley Handicap Hurdle at Fontwell on September 22, 1947.

The second winner, on Brown Cottage came in the featured Troytown Handicap Chase at Lingfield on January 17, 1948. They then won the valuable (£620 9s to the winner) Princes Handicap Chase over 3m 5f 25yds at Sandown seven days later.

Both Peter’s winners the following season were gained on Bob Maxwell’s Jackrock, in a Plumpton novices’ chase and a Fontwell selling chase in the autumn of 1948. The highlight of his four-winner haul for 1949/50 was a double at Southwell in October, aboard Geoff Kennedy’s chasers Fair Drift and Winning Plan.

His tally of three for 1950/51 included Tom Masson’s popular chaser Zarter in the Abergavenny Challenge Cup at Plumpton on Easter Monday. He won again on Zarter over course and distance in November 1951 and then scored a repeat victory in Plumpton’s Abergavenny Challenge Cup on Easter Monday 1952. He rode just one more winner, Geoff Kennedy’s Crisel in the Craigwel Selling Handicap Chase at Fontwell on Bonfire Night, November 5, 1952. Alas, there were no more fireworks for Peter Smith, who relinquished his licence at the end of that season.
