Adam Shoults

Adam Francis Shoults was born on December 11, 1965, and lived at Flat 4, 29 Park Lane, Newmarket.

He became apprenticed to Jeremy Hindley in August 1983 and rode his first winner, Hawkley 10/1, at Kempton in the Willie Carson Apprentice Handicap on May 5, 1984. This was a chance mount as J. Scally was originally down to ride.

On Saturday, June 2 that year, came what he later called the highlight of his career. Riding Lovers Bid in the Holsten Diat Pils Handicap at Newmarket, he beat Lester Piggott by a short head. This was Adam's second only winner.

In August that year, he was banned for 12 days for reckless riding (on Amazmia at Catterick). He won on his first ride back, King Charlemagne at Haydock Park.

When, on September 17, 1984, Walter Swinburn got stuck in a traffic jam on the M6, Adam deputized successfully when bringing Balmacara home at Wolverhampton.

Adam put up a terrific riding performance when winning Newcastle's £10,000 feature, the Brunswick Handicap, on Air Command on April 8, 1985.

He began getting good rides from Saltburn-by-the-Sea trainer Mary Revelry.

On September 17, 1987, Adam confidently rode the 6/4 favourite Tancred Sands to a third successive win in the Bogside Cup at Ayr.

Adam's last ride was on Cuban Reef for D. Cosgrave at Lingfield on January 7, 1995.

Aged 29, Adam slipped quietly away from the racing scene.

Away from racing, Adam enjoyed squash and snooker.
