Charles Sample

Charles Sample, from Morpeth, Northumberland, was born on April 4, 1953, the son of amateur rider and permit holder Major Billy Sample who rode 14 winners under National Hunt rules between 1954 and 1961.

Charles rode his first winner on Angus McTavish, owned by his mother and trained by his father, in the three-runner Grasmere Novices’ Chase at Carlisle on Saturday, 25 September, 1976, beating that season’s champion jockey Tommy Stack on the odds-on favourite Seldom Daunted by a length.

Charles served in the Army and rode in Sandown’s Grand Military Gold Cup ten times, winning it at the second attempt in 1978 on Lord Leverhulme’s chaser Mr Snowman, trained by Tim Forster.

He finished second in the 1980 Grand Military Gold Cup on Mark Henry, third on Cold Spell in 1982 and third again on Golden Trix in 1983. He rode in the race for the final time in 1989, finishing sixth on Timurs Double.

His brother, Major Matthew Sample, rode in the Grand Military Gold Cup three times, coming closest when second on Maori Venture in 1987, less than a month before Steve Knight rode that horse to victory in the Grand National.
