Born in 1936, Peter James Smith had just one win from around two dozen rides in the 1963/64 National Hunt season, but the quality of jockeys who finished behind him on that memorable day shows that it was no mean achievement.
He had his first ride at Market Rasen on Easter Monday, April 15, 1963, when Song o’ the Moon finished sixth of the eight runners, with Peter putting up 4lb overweight at 10st 1lb, in the Rase Selling Handicap Hurdle.
His only win came at Stratford on November 7, 1963, in the Warwickshire Handicap Hurdle, with his mount, Somersault, beating David Nicholson on Columba by two lengths. Champion jockeys Stan Mellor and Josh Gifford were third and fourth respectively on Gail Greine and Lady Don, while Johnny Lehane, Tim Brookshaw and Roy Edwards were among the also rans.
Five-year-old Somersault was trained by Norman Wolstencroft at Hednesford, Staffordshire, and had finished third on his only previous start that season at Hereford. Peter rode him in six more races that season but failed to make the frame in any of them.
He had his final ride at Wolverhampton on March 15, 1966, when Bentillo was unplaced in the Willenhall Handicap Hurdle.
