Aide Smith

Adrian Stewart Smith was born at Bloxwich, near Walsall, on October 12, 1966.

He was apprenticed initially to local trainer Peter Smith and then to Oliver Sherwood.

Aide's first winner was Saunson Boy, trained by J. P. Smith, in the Partridge Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle at Towcester on 17th January 1986.

He rode his first winner for Sherwood on Drowsy in a Worcester novices’ hurdle on January 19, 1988.

Aide was a northern-based jump jockey for some 13 years. He didn’t ride any big winners, although he came close when finishing second on Inn At The Top in the 2001 Great Yorkshire Chase, touched off by Heidi III to whom he was giving 22lb.

Aide rode in two Grand Nationals: on Castle Coin in 1999 (unseated rider 26th) and Inn At The Top in 2002 (fell 1st).

He rode a total of 266 winners, his best season being in 1998/99 with 33 winners from 346 rides. He retired from the saddle in July 2002 to become a starter and thereafter a steward’s secretary. By 2010 he was officiating as a BHA stipendiary steward.
