Douglas Stewart

(1897 - c1960)

Amateur rider Douglas Dormer Stewart rode a total of 27 winners under National Hunt rules between 1923 and 1933, achieving his greatest success when finishing alone in the 1924 Valentine Chase over the Grand National fences.

He rode for the first time under NH rules when falling on Ruan in the Quarndon Selling Chase at Derby on March 7, 1922. Just over a year later he rode his first winner when bringing home 6-1 chance Equancourt by three-quarters of a length in the Tasley Chase at Bridgnorth on April 24, 1923.

On November 8, 1924 he rode Rockmeadow, the 10-1 outsider of six runners in the Valentine Chase, a race for amateur riders over part of the Grand National course. All of their five rivals either fell or refused, leaving Douglas and Rockmeadow to complete the course alone and claim the winner’s prize.

He enjoyed his best seasons numerically in 1925/26 and 1926/27 with five winners in each.

Douglas rode what proved to be his last winner on 5-2 chance Subjugate in the Wincanton Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle at Wincanton on Easter Monday, April 17, 1933, beating future Grand National-winning rider Captain Bobby Petre on the favourite Plaster Of Paris by three lengths.

He continued to have the occasional mount thereafter, appearing for the final time when pulling up 20-1 outsider Isdes in the Welsh Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle at Newport on May 26, 1947.
