Clive Straker

1926 - 1980


Clive Balgray Straker, brother of fellow jockey John Joicey Straker, was born in Northumberland on April 20, 1926.

He had his first ride in public at Carlisle in 1946.

His first winner was Little David at Hexham on June 10, 1946.

Clive became champion amateur in 1951-52 with 19 wins.

His father, Ian, (1888 -1970), also a jockey, rode 31 winners.

Clive suffered from diabetes from the age of five but refused to make this handicap an excuse for anything, saying that no one should hide behind illness.

He rode Starlit Bay (fell) in the 1952 Grand National.

Clive won the 1952 National Hunt Chase on Frosty Knight.

He also won an incredible 23 races on Rand Mines.

Clive rode a total of 108 winners.

He died on May 28, 1980, aged 54.
