Martin Sanders

South-west National Hunt jockey Martin Victor Sanders was born on June 7, 1949.

He started out as an apprentice on the flat with Vernon Cross before becoming based with David Barons for four seasons from 1968/70 to 1972/73 and rode a total of 21 winners.

His first ride was on Billijac (for Barons) at Newton Abbot on 5th April 1969.

His first win was gained on Lively Maid in a Stratford novices’ hurdle on October 25, 1969, his sole success from 24 mounts that season.

He scored three times the following season but enjoyed by far his best campaign in 1971/72 when he managed 15 wins from 91 rides. They included six victories on Chingley Lass who captured four early season novice hurdles around Newton Abbot and Devon & Exeter during August and September, followed by handicap hurdles at Taunton and Devon & Exeter in November.

He took out a Flat jockey’s licence in 1972 but had few rides and no winners.

Martin began the 1972/73 campaign by riding the Barons-trained Adjudicator to win novice hurdles at Newton Abbot on July 31 and Devon & Exeter on August 2. However, those two wins in the opening week of the season were to be his last. He finished second on Adjudicator back at Newton Abbot the following week.

On November 10, 1972, whilst helping to school some new arrivals, Martin suffered a career-ending injury, resulting in the removal of a kneecap.
