Alfred Sharples Sr.

Alf Sharples rode his first winner on Rock Castle at Catterick on April 7, 1904. He rode a total of 77 winners in Britain, the most important of which was the 1904 Cesarewitch on Wargrave.

His other major success came in the 1909 Irish Derby on Bachelor’s Double, beating champion jockey Steve Donoghue on The Phoenician by one and a half lengths. 

Alfred Sharples died on June 26 1935, aged 50.  His son, also named Alfred, followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a jockey. Alfred Jr. was killed in a fall at Windsor on November 5, 1938.
