Roger George Shepherd had one win under National Hunt rules, having begun his career when finishing fifth on Shane in the Upton Selling Hurdle at Warwick on December 31, 1964.
Based with Wilmer Mann, who trained at Bishops Itchington, near Leamington Spa, Roger had few opportunities, although he did have two rides at Towcester on Easter Monday 1965, finishing fourth on Triplicate in the Hulcote Selling Handicap Chase and last of nine on Mistaking in the Duncote Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2).
He had to wait until Kempton Park’s meeting on February 3, 1967 for his sole success. It came when the 10-year-old Valmouth, trained by Wilmer Mann, took the lead at the twelfth fence and stayed on to win the Fulwell Handicap Chase by twelve lengths. The race was for novice riders, and among those who finished behind Roger that day were Jimmy Fox, Frank Nash and Ron Atkins, the latter finishing second on No Justice.
Roger had been placed twice on Valmouth earlier in the campaign so was not winning out of turn. He had two more rides on the gelding that season, finishing unplaced at Towcester in March and second at Ludlow in April when putting up 3lb overweight at 10st 2lb.
He finished fifth on his final ride when partnering Foxlight Fancy in the Edgehill Handicap Hurdle at Stratford on September 28, 1968.
