Richard Smith

The son of a farmer, Richard James Smith was born on May 29, 1948 and rode his first winner, Hope Again, at Newton Abbot on May 28, 1970.


Richard was champion amateur in 1972-73 with 56 wins.


Not long after turning professional he was forced to retire after breaking his neck in a fall at Newton Abbot in May 1974.


He gained his biggest success on Highland Abbe in the Lloyds Bank Hurdle in 1974.


He had one ride in the Grand National: Bullock's Horn, 1972 (refused).


Richard's height was 5ft 8ins.
