George Swift

George was born at Brampton, Huntingdonshire, and was apprenticed to H. Wycherley at Epsom (3 years) and to William Reeves for a further seven.

His first winner was Little Tom at Newmarket.

He once broke both legs in a race and spent a year in hospital.

He won the Doncaster Handicap on Wrestler.

George was a well-known figure in Newmarket, dressing in a frock coat and wearing an old-fashioned top hat.

On his retirement, he lived in one of the Rous Memorial Almshouses wife his wife on a Bentinck pension.

He died at Newmarket on March 29, 1913. He was 81.
