Peter Supple

The son of a builder, Peter Bernard Supple was born in Chatham, Kent, on March 23, 1940, and was apprenticed to Fred Winter Sr. from 1954 to 1959.

He rode his first winner on Golden Vale in the Landbeach Apprentice Handicap at Newmarket on July 17, 1957, his only win as an apprentice.

After completing his apprenticeship, he rode under National Hunt rules from 1959 to 1965, chiefly for trainer Don Butchers. His best season was in 1961/62, during which he rode 16 winners. They included Lingfield’s Felcourt Handicap Chase on Carrickbeg, aboard which he finished second to Frenchman’s Cove in the 1962 Whitbread Gold Cup.

His last two wins over jumps were at Windsor at the start of 1964, aboard Cawkwell Hill in the Jasmine Juvenile Hurdle on January 3, and The Wolf in the Royal Borough Handicap Hurdle the following day.

He became assistant trainer to Southfleet, Kent trainer Jack Bartholomew and also took out a Flat jockey’s licence for one season in 1964. He had three winners that year, the first of which, 20/1 outsider Pamade at Newmarket’s Craven Meeting, had been the result of losing 21lb over a six-week period to make the weight.

Peter rode for the final time at Plumpton on February 10, 1965, when Dufton Pike was unplaced in the Seaford Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2). He had ridden a total of 43 winners.

Peter stayed as Jack Bartholomew’s assistant until taking out his own trainer’s licence in March 1968, based at Clock House Stables, near Dartford. He later trained in Hong Kong.

He sent out his fiftieth winner as trainer in just three seasons and, on March 25, 1974, when High Award won at Leicester, his 100th winner as a trainer.
