George Charles Smith rode over jumps for more than 15 years, ending his career with 19 wins, the highlight of which was his triumph in the Broadway Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham’s National Hunt meeting.
His first victory came in the Woore Plate, a steeplechase, at that Shropshire venue on April 1, 1909, when Uncle Sam III beat seven rivals, only two of which finished. Three subsequent starts did not go so well for the partnership, comprising two falls and a ‘ran out’.
George had one more win before the year ended but then had to wait until 1911 for further success. He had four victories that year, then added another in 1913 before the outbreak of World War I.
Having resumed his career, he lost his allowance when riding his tenth winner at Cheltenham in November 1919 but went on to record his greatest victory at Cheltenham’s National Hunt meeting on March 3, 1921, when Habton recorded an eight-length success the Broadway Novices’ Chase, known today as the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, previously the RSA Chase.
He also had a ride over the Liverpool fences in that year’s Stanley Chase, although his mount, Eastward, was one of several casualties, with only Mask Man, the mount of Fred Gurney, completing the course without mishap.
His last win was at Uttoxeter on March 3, 1924, when Vambrace beat Poor Tom by four lengths in a match for the Stoke-on-Trent Hurdle. Poor Tom, the 6/4 on favourite, was ridden by Billy Stott, who would go on to be champion jockey five times.
George had his second ride over the Liverpool fences when partnering 100/1 shot Double Escape in the 1924 Grand National. They were among the many fallers after being prominent early.
He rode for the last time when unplaced on Nine Tree Hill in the Clifton Selling Hurdle at Nottingham on October 25, 1926. He relinquished his licence later that season.
