Brendan Sheridan

Kill is a village in County Kildare, where jockey Ruby Walsh was brought up. So, too, was Brendan Sheridan, born on August 12 1960, who attended Kill National School.

His association with the Walsh family dated back to when he first went to work at Ted Walsh’s Co. Kildare yard as a 10-year-old schoolboy.

As a jockey he won most of the major jump races in Ireland but he rated his victory on Rare Holiday in the 1990 Triumph Hurdle as his most memorable moment.

His other big wins included the 1988 Irish Grand National on Perris Valley – he rode that same horse in the 1989 Aintree Grand National but pulled up; a Galway Plate on the Dermot Weld-trained Kilchi, plus an Ericsson Chase, a Thyestes Chase, an Irish Champion Hurdle, two Power Gold Cups and three Leopardstown Chases.

Brendan won eleven races on Barney Burnett, nine on Garamycin including back-to-back Leopardstown Chases, and eight on General Idea including the Power Gold Cup and Ericsson Chase.

He retired at the age of 35, having ridden a total of 450 winners, including three in England and one in Australia, during a career stretching back 19 years. Brendan then took up a position as an official with the Irish Turf Club. He is now Clerk of the Course at eight Irish racecourses.
