John Sharpe NH

Amateur rider John Sharpe rode a total of 80 winners under National Hunt rules between 1892 and 1906. He was the man to follow at the annual Retford Hunt Steeplechases fixture, where he recorded four doubles among his 11 wins there.

John had his first ride under NH rules at Sheffield & Rotherham’s meeting on Boxing Day 1889, finishing second, beaten two lengths, on Funchal in the United Hunts Cup Steeplechase. He rode his first winner at Manchester on Easter Monday, April 18, 1892, guiding 10-1 chance Borderer to a three-length success in the Hurdle Race Plate.

He rode six winners in 1893, nine in 1894 and seven in both 1895 and 1896. His 1896 haul included a double at Retford on April 18, winning the Clumber Selling Chase on Lost Intelligence and the Viscount Galway’s Hunt Farmers’ Chase on Deemster.

He equalled his best tally of nine in 1900, recording another double at Retford on April 2, aboard Wimbrel in the Sandbeck Steeplechase and Flinton in the Retford Steeplechase.

In 1902 he finished fourth in the National Hunt Chase on Garendon and had his only ride in the Grand National on 50-1 chance Dirkhampton, who was among the fallers.

He registered yet another Retford double on April 13, 1904, guiding Dermot Asthore to victory in the Retford Chase and then being gifted a walkover on Rosy Glen in the Clumber Handicap Chase. In 1905 he again equalled his best score of nine wins but was out of luck at that year Retford’s fixture, finishing second twice and third twice from four rides.

Appropriately, John rode the last winner of his career at Retford, that being Bobs IV in the Wiseton Selling Chase on April 2, 1906. His final ride ended in a fall from Nativity in the Selling Hurdle at Market Rasen on Easter Monday, April 20, 1908.
