Bill Stephens

c1860 - 1897

Born in Hereford circa 1860, William Edward (Bill) Stephens finished third in the 1886 Grand National on Gamecock, the best horse he rode during his career. Gamecock gave him his biggest victory when winning the 1886 Grand International Chase.

He rode Belgrade to win the last race at the last meeting ever held at Tamworth, on April 15, 1879.


He rode 114 winners over jumps and finished third in the National Hunt jockeys' table in 1884 with 23 winners. He rode in two Grand Nationals, finishing third on Gamecock in 1886. His last win was on a horse named Opponent in the Solihull Selling Chase at Hall Green on May 21, 1894.

In retirement he was a licensed victualler in Kilsby, Northamptonshire.

Bill died on July 16, 1897, aged 36. He left £224.
