Jim was born on March 21, 1905. He was apprenticed to Dobson Peacock at Middleham and won the Ayr Gold in 1923 on Baydon while still an apprentice.

Having, in 1925, ridden at Ripon, James caught a chill and became seriously ill with pneumonia. Happily, he fully recovered.
